Mercator Fellow

Since 2024, Prof. Dr. Klaus-Michael Bogdal is Senior Advisor of the Research Unit  “Antigypsyism and Ambivalence in Europe (1850–1950)." He is Professor Emeritus of German Literary Studies at Bielefeld University (2001–2017). From 2017 to 2021, he served as Senior Research Professor and Chair of the Bielefeld Norbert Elias Lectures.

His research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century literature, contemporary literature, literary theory, and the history of scholarship, as well as the European dimensions of cultural-historical processes. He regularly publishes in national newspapers, including Der Tagesspiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung.

In 2013, he was awarded the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding for his book Europe erfindet die Zigeuner, which has been translated into several languages. He served as Deputy Chair of the Advisory Board of RomArchive, which received the Grand Prix of the European Heritage Awards in 2019 and the Grimme Online Award in 2020. He was also a member of the Independent Expert Commission on Antigypsyism of the German Federal Government (2019–2021).
