Motivation for the visit
This Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) at Charles University in Prague was called “Beyond Words. Integrating Diversity, Well-Being and Inner Development in Language Education". The program was highly relevant for us as language teachers. Charles University is a long-established university with a large International Center. As BIPs provide valuable networking opportunities with colleagues from different universities and the chance to exchange best practices, this was an opportunity not to be missed.
Preparation
The notification came late, only one week before the registration deadline and right during the Christmas season, so organizing the trip was somewhat challenging. Nevertheless, we successfully arranged flights and accommodation. Unfortunately, there are no direct connections from Hamburg to Prague, but the centrally located hotel was within close proximity to the university building where the workshops were held.
Public transportation in Prague proved to be efficient and affordable. The journey from the airport to the city center took approximately 40 minutes with one transfer. Tickets can be conveniently purchased at stations with a credit or debit card. Heads up: you need to purchase a ticket for your luggage as well!
Prague offers a wide range of dining options, including both international and local cuisine. Prices in central tourist areas are slightly higher but generally comparable to those in Germany, while supermarkets appeared somewhat less expensive.
Stay
The program was diverse and engaging, featuring interactive workshops led by language teachers from participating universities as well as the host university. The exchanges and discussions were consistently insightful and provided valuable perspectives. The program also facilitated networking opportunities as well as the sharing of effective teaching practices.
The city itself is a very beautiful, historic and culturally rich place with plenty of museums, concerts, exhibitions and so on. The architecture is also very beautiful. Our hosts were very kind, friendly and helpful. Although we finished at around 5 p.m. almost every day, we still managed to fit in a concert or a visit to a museum.
Conclusion
The BIP enhanced our awareness of key issues such as diversity, student and teacher well-being, and inner development in the context of language teaching. The workshops offered practical strategies that can be applied in the classroom, as well as resources for further reflection and continued professional development.
