In the Sustainable Energy (SE) master’s program, offered by Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) in collaboration with Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (FUAS), you will become an expert in renewable energies – with a holistic approach. 

You can choose one of three specializations:

The Engineering specialization focuses on the complex technology that makes sustainable energy systems possible.

You will explore the various technologies and how they interact, and learn about solutions for stable power supply and renewable energy storage.

Fascinating projects, excursions, and research work will prepare you for a career in the international energy sector.

Course content: What this degree program is all about

  • Renewable energies and the technologies behind them:
    • How is energy generated?
    • How do different systems work together?
    • How can energy supply be optimized?
    • What grid solutions are available to ensure a stable power supply based on renewable energies?
    • How can electricity from renewable energies be stored?
  • What interactions exist between technologies, political framework conditions, and ecological and social impacts?
  • What innovations can support the energy transition?

This is what your studies will look like – semester by semester (details may vary, see next section)

To start your SE Engineering degree, you will complete the Analysis and Complexity of Energy Systems (ACES) module together with students from other specializations. This module focuses on the sustainability of energy systems, supply strategies, and the integration of renewable energies.

Your specialization will focus on the issue of energy storage. 

You will also take elective modules on topics such as Electrochemical Energy Technology or Hybrid Power Systems and Energy Management.

If you wish, you can attend courses that are part of other degree programs (such as M.Eng. Wind Engineering or M.A. International Management Studies) and add valuable knowledge and experience to your personal profile.

In the second semester of your SE Engineering degree program, you will  take the compulsory module Sustainable and Just Energy System Solutions (SEnSe), which that covers all three areas of specialization. In this module, you will learn more about the fundamentals and approaches of sustainable and just energy and climate policy.

In the Engineering specialization, you will focus on sustainability in mechanical engineering.

Elective modules and courses from other degree programs complete your schedule.

In the third semester of your SE Engineering degree, you will write your master’s thesis. For your research project, which takes several months to complete, you should address some of the real-world challenges of energy transition. Once you have defended your thesis in a colloquium, you will be awarded your degree.

Admission requirements: What you need to study SE Engineering

At a glance:

  • Admission to the program is restricted – there are only 10 places available. If your bachelor’s degree grade is good enough, you will be admitted.
  • In addition, you must have a bachelor’s degree with a certain scope and relevance to engineering or industrial engineering, or be about to complete such a bachelor’s degree.

With the English-language M.Eng. in Sustainable Energy, you will become an expert in sustainable energy systems. This is an excellent prerequisite for a position in the international energy sector.

You should choose the engineering specialization if you are fascinated by the technical aspects of sustainable energy systems.

You will learn about the framework conditions that play a role in energy transition.

You can customize your master’s degree and will be supported by expert lecturers.

Projects and close contact with industry will prepare you for senior positions with good remuneration.

Admission to the Engineering specialization is restricted: you can only be admitted if you have a good bachelor’s degree. You must have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, such as engineering, and be able to speak English well. Learn more on the application page of the degree program.

You must demonstrate good English skills. German is not required for the application (but there are free language courses at EUF if you want to learn it). You can find the exact language requirements on the application page of the program.

Yes, you can. In this case, you will be granted provisional admission (also known as conditional admission). You will then have to take so-called bridge courses (see bottom of page) to increase your knowledge and credits.

With a degree in SE Engineering, you can apply your technical knowledge in energy companies, government agencies, and organizations related to the environment, sustainability, and renewable energies. Research and teaching are also open to you. You can take on management positions, which usually come with excellent pay.

EUF is a small university in northern Germany with a green campus and many international students. There are free language courses, a sports center, a swimming pool, and student organizations (political, environmental, intercultural, religious, etc.).

There are often evening events, such as movie and game nights or barbecues.

You can reach several beaches by bus: Flensburg is located on the Flensburg Firth. The Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and Denmark are not far away. Hamburg is only two hours away by train.
