Project Work 2026/27

How is the whole process of Project Work going to work with students who will be abroad next term?

You should also decide and apply for one of the projects on offer, even if you are planning to go abroad. We have always conceived of Project Work as a module in your fifth semester that you can easily take abroad with you. If you are actually going, the ‘normal’ deadlines do not apply, and you can finish and hand in your paper after your return. Ask your supervisor, and they will arrange the details with you. What is necessary, however, is your careful preparation during the summer, which should not be postponed.

Am I bound in my choice to the discipline – either Literature or Linguistics – in which I am writing my Module 5 Term Paper in the fourth semester?

No, you are not. You are absolutely free to now go for the other field, or to stick to the one you have already worked in. For those of you planning to write their bachelors thesis in the English Department, however, it might be advisable to choose Project Work in the direction of that potential BA-Thesis. Some supervisors strongly favour this preparatory choice (inquire with the supervisor of your choice), although we have accepted others in some cases. As our general ground rules have it, this Project Work is the best preparation for an informed and sensible choice for your bachelor thesis topic.

Will I be accepted in the course of my choice?

We have instituted a new “priority-based” system for 2026, in which you will be able to rank the four Project Work courses by order of preference. This is not done on a first-come, first-served basis, but rather everyone who completes the form below will be sorted into one of the four courses based on your preferences. Most students should receive their first choice, some may rather receive their second choice or possibly third, based on a balance of registrations across the four courses. The instructors will be in contact with you during the sorting process in this case.

When will I know whether I have been accepted and registered?

We will contact you to confirm your registration before the exam weeks are over.

Information on project work as part of Module 7 (BA English) for the fall semester 2026/27

In the English compulsory module 7, you have the opportunity to practice research techniques on the basis of Anglo-American literature or linguistics with your own specialization.

The following regulations apply:

The project work (like the BA thesis in English) can only be written in the sub-disciplines of literature and linguistics. The areas of Cultural Studies and TEFL are not eligible.

Your choice is crucial for defining your area of specialization. You may choose to focus on either linguistics or literary-studies methodology in greater depth; the project work also offers the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a meaningful Bachelor's thesis in English Studies, but does not limit your choice to write the BA thesis in the corresponding area.

The feedback received from your project work will assist you in deciding whether you wish to write your Bachelor's thesis in English. In any case, the outcome of this individual project work must be documented in the form of an academic paper (written in English, approximately 10–12 pages in length), which will be graded and—if passed—credited with 5 ECTS points.

The latest submission date for this written project paper is January 8, 2027.

Subject Areas

Following the information session (Thursday, May 21, 2026, 4:00 PM in OSL 239.1), the subject areas available for selection for the 2026/27 Winter Semester will also be posted on the website of the Department of English and American Studies (www.uni-flensburg.de/englisch) under the heading "Projektarbeit 2026," where you will also find detailed information regarding the individual subject areas. For the 2026/27 Winter Semester, you may choose from a selection of three projects in Literary Studies and one project in Linguistics.

Registration

As the supervision capacities of individual lecturers are limited, timely registration is mandatory.

Registration opens on May 22, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. and is conducted via the form linked below by ranking the four subject areas in order of preference. Based on this information, the lecturers will allocate the available spots. The assignments will subsequently be entered into the Studiport system by the departmental secretariat.

It is not possible to enroll in this sub-module without completing this prior registration during the specified period.

Please feel free to direct any questions you may have to the respective lecturers; in the case of Linguistics, please contact the Institute Spokesperson (birgit.daewes-PleaseRemoveIncludingDashes-@uni-flensburg.de).
