Alexandra Krumm in France

Alexandra Krumm (Department for Sustainable Energy Transition) took part in a language course at the University of Caen Normandy.

Motivation

French is one of the most important languages in Europe – culturally, politically, and economically. Since I had no previous knowledge of the language, I started learning French last year. The language course in Caen offered me the ideal opportunity to improve my language skills in a short period of time while immersing myself completely in the language and culture. I found it particularly appealing that the course not only offered structured language lessons, but also many opportunities to apply what I had learned directly in everyday life.

Preparation

I planned my stay as early as possible. Since I opted for the environmentally friendly “green travel” option, I traveled by train. I chose a small apartment in the city center, from which I could quickly get to the language school and explore the city on foot.

Stay

The course was varied and combined grammar, speaking exercises, listening comprehension, and phonetics. In addition, the teachers placed great emphasis on teaching French culture, which made the lessons lively and practical. In the afternoons, there was a varied cultural program: city tours, museum visits, trips to the botanical garden—and anyone who wanted to could reach the beach in just 30 minutes.

Conclusion

The language course and my stay in France have deepened my understanding of the French language and given me a solid foundation on which I can now build. This experience not only opens up new professional prospects at the EUF—for example, through expanded opportunities for cooperation and the development of new fields of research—but also enriches my private life by significantly broadening my cultural horizons.
