Description

Target Group

The French Intensive Course A1 is suitable for participants with no prior knowledge of French. It is aimed at students whose degree programmes include a foreign language module as a compulsory component of their studies (e.g. Social Sciences), as well as students from all faculties and staff members of the EUF.

Course Content

The course focuses primarily on the acquisition of basic introductory knowledge of the French language. The topics covered and the teaching and learning activities are based on the textbook “Perspectives Allez-y ! A1” (see below). The course follows both a communicative and an intercultural approach.

Through everyday conversational topics and situations (greetings and introductions, drinks and ordering, likes and dislikes, work, hobbies, etc.), the four language skills — speaking, writing, reading, and listening — are developed and practised at A1 level in accordance with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation are taught and learned using a variety of exercise formats and teaching methods.

Key grammar topics include: personal pronouns, articles, question words, adjective agreement and position, possessive determiners, negation, conjugation of -er and -ir verbs, perfect tense with avoir and être, modal verbs, reflexive verbs, and the future tense.

Workload

  • 100 teaching units (UE): classroom instruction
  • 80 teaching units (UE): self-study (homework, final assessment)

Organisation

Course Dates:
09 February – 06 March 2026 (4 weeks)
Monday to Friday, 09:30 – 15:30

The course is designed so that participants complete levels A1.1 and A1.2 within four weeks. Upon successful completion of the final test, students may enrol in French A2 in the following semester.

Credits:
5 ECTS

Active participation in class as well as independent learning outside of class hours (completion of homework, vocabulary and grammar practice, etc.) are prerequisites for successfully completing the course. The final assessment consists of written homework (10%), an oral component (20%), and a final examination (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written production, as well as grammar and vocabulary) (70%).

Participants may receive a graded certificate of achievement if they have completed all course requirements and successfully passed the final examination. Only a certificate of achievement qualifies students for enrolment in the subsequent course.
