Teaching in Comprehensive Schools – Master of Education (M.Ed.)

Teach children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds and experience real diversity.

Contents

All under one roof: Support heterogeneous learning groups!

If you enjoy diversity and teamwork, teaching in comprehensive schools is the right choice for you. In comprehensive schools, children and adolescents from various backgrounds are taught together – in Schleswig-Holstein starting from grade 5, and in some federal states even from the first grade.

This inclusive teaching breaks down barriers and creates permeability in the education system. As a teacher, your focus here is on promoting individual strengths in heterogeneous groups.

Your teaching will need plenty of flexibility – internal differentiation is the key. However, you won’t face this challenge alone, as team teaching is widespread in comprehensive schools. If this sounds appealing to you, an exciting and varied professional life awaits you.

With the M.Ed. in Teaching in Comprehensive Schools at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF), we support you on this path. Our master’s program consists of three subjects:

With societal and teaching-related information, specific subject-related didactic knowledge, and plenty of practical experience in schools, we prepare you optimally for teaching in comprehensive schools. Read on if you want to learn more!

Two paths, one goal: Your subject combination in the M.Ed. Teaching in Comprehensive Schools

For teaching in comprehensive schools, you have two options: You can either combine two subjects from the lower secondary level (Sek I, grades 5–10) or one subject from the lower secondary level with one from the upper secondary level (Sek II, grades 5–13).

  • Two Sek I subjects: With this combination, you focus on grades 5 to 10. You establish the subject-specific foundations, support students through a formative phase of life, and often take on the role of class teacher.
  • Sek I subject + Sek II subject: With an upper secondary subject, you can teach and examine up to the Abitur in comprehensive schools with an academic secondary school track. This makes you more universally employable.

No matter what you decide – both paths lead to teaching in comprehensive schools, and you earn the same salary. The question is: Do you want to focus entirely on the middle school or also teach the upper level, up to the Abitur?

Your first teaching subject
Your second teaching subject

This is what your studies will look like – semester by semester

In the first and second semesters of your comprehensive school master’s program, you continue studying the two teaching subjects you already studied as part of your bachelor’s. You move from the basics to in-depth knowledge and learn how to teach this knowledge to children and adolescents using subject-specific didactics.

You also engage with questions of teaching, education, and professionalization, as well as the role of schools in the context of society in the subject Bildung, Erziehung, Gesellschaft (Education and Society).

In the third semester, you continue studying your two subjects but also complete a ten- or twelve-week practical phase at a school. This is reflected upon in an accompanying seminar so that you are not left alone with your experiences and can continue developing as a teacher.

If you want to broaden your horizons with a stay abroad, now is a good time to do so.

In the final semester, you write your master’s thesis, which is thematically anchored in one of your three subjects. In addition, you attend further courses in your two teaching subjects.

Want to know all the details?

Off into the world: Your semester abroad

If you want to expand your theoretical and practical experience from your bachelor’s and the first semesters of your master’s and test it in a completely different environment, studying abroad or completing a practical phase abroad is an excellent option.

This way, you can experience the fact that schools do not operate the same way everywhere as they do in Germany. At EUF, we make it easy for you to opt for this adventure: You’ll receive organizational support from our International Center, financial assistance through the Erasmus+ program, and a predefined time frame so that your master’s studies will not normally take any longer. Worldwide, you have access to nearly 90 partner universities; as a free mover, you have an even wider selection.

However, the semester abroad is not mandatory. If you prefer to stay, you can simply take additional courses in your subjects.
