Since 2016, Ulrich Glassmann is Professor of Comparative Political Economy at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF). Since 2024, he also is an associate researcher at the Cluster of Excellence 'The Politics of Inequality' at the University of Konstanz. He was also visiting professor and fellow at the universities of Bologna, Konstanz, Siena, and the European University Institute in Florence.
From 2021 to 2024, he was Vice-President for European and International Affairs at the EUF and responsible for the university's successful funding application as part of the EMERGE university alliance in the European Commission's 'European Universities' initiative.
Following his Master's degree in Political Science, History and Philosophy at the University of Cologne (1997), he was a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne and an external collaborator on a research project at the European University Institute in Florence. He received his PhD in Economics and Social Science from the University of Osnabrück in 2005.
In 2007, he was appointed assistant professor at the Chair of Comparative Politics at the University of Cologne. During his time at the University of Cologne, he received research grants from the Volkswagen and Thyssen Foundations. From 2013 to 2015, he was professor pro tempore at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and then worked at the Cluster of Excellence 'Cultural Foundations of Social Integration' both at the University of Konstanz.
In his research Ulrich Glassmann focuses on international comparisons of economic, educational and social policies, with a particular focus on the conflict dimensions of inequality, debt and corruption. Theoretically, he is interested in the patterns of cooperation and conflict among economic and political actors in collective action dilemmas. The focus of his work is on the economies of the Mediterranean region.
