Course description:

The Discussion & Conversation course is designed for students who wish to improve their speaking skills by discussing current or controversial issues, in a safe environment. Discussion topics will be chosen from those suggested by the instructor. Students can also suggest topics they would like to discuss.

 

Prerequisite:

The course is suitable for students who have completed the B2 course (upper intermediate) or have B2 level.

 

Course Material: There is no textbook for this course, but the instructor will upload some relevant reading texts/ videos on Moodle for students to read before class. Students are welcome to suggest reading material relevant to a certain topic or read their own choices to add various perspectives to the discussions. There may also be handouts for vocabulary practice, again related to the topic to be discussed.

 

Assessment:

This course is not assessed. Please talk to your instructor if you need credit points. The credit you can from this course is 2 ECT. The assessment for this course, where applicable, is a class presentation on a topic that the student and instructor agree on as well as a short, written reflection. The presentation and the short reflection will make up 70% of your grade. The remaining 30 % will be your class participation and contributions to discussions.

The English C1.1 course is designed for students who want to take their English language skills to the next level. The course will focus on developing advanced language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking with an emphasis on academic and professional contexts.

Prerequisite:

The course is suitable for students who have completed the B2 course (intermediate) or have B2 level.

Assessment:

In this course you will be continuously assessed. Assessment for this course consists of portfolio work and ongoing classroom engagement. The portfolio accounts for 60% of your grade and is assessed using a detailed rubric outlining required components and grading criteria. It includes in-class and at-home writing tasks, and the final draft of the argumentative essay, which is assessed as part of this component. The remaining 40% is based on classroom participation, a short in-class presentation, and the first draft of the argumentative essay. You should attend all course meetings and if for some reason you won’t be able to join a class, always contact your course instructor.

The C1.2 English language level course is for students who want to expand on their previous English language knowledge at an advanced level. The course is suitable for students who have completed the C1.1 course (advanced) or have approximately 600-650 classroom hours of English language lessons.

Content:

The focus of this course is on advanced English language skills. Attention is paid to the four primary language skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course is rooted in an English for academic purposes pedagogy but is applicable to everyday life.

 

Assessment:

In this course you will be continuously assessed. Assessment for this course consists of portfolio work and ongoing classroom engagement. Target Group: The building academic vocabulary short course is for students with a B2 English level proficiency or higher (B2-C2) who want to expand their vocabulary for academic purposes and/or want to “close the gap” between non-native and native like English proficiency.

Content: This course focuses on building your academic vocabulary. This is the vocabulary used regardless of major within academia and one way to become more fluent in the English language. Furthermore, if you are studying in English in a non-native English speaking country, building your vocabulary is integral part of enhancing your English abilities. The first part of the course focuses on vocabulary development and the uses words from the General Service List. The second part of the course provides practice using words from the Academic Word List sublists 1-5.

Format:

This is a self-study with instructor support. This means you have access to all the materials, including answer keys, and that an instructor oversees the structure and timing of activities, as well as answers any questions throughout the semester. A syllabus is provided and assignments can be uploaded to moodle to keep you on track to finish the course. The instructor will send weekly reminders but you can generally work at your own pace.

Assessment: Completion of homework assignments. Post-test on the last day of course and turning in of language portfolio.

This course uses the learning management software moodle, and the online meetings software Webex when needed. Further materials related to the book are available through the publisher’s website.

 Target Group:

The Grammar and Punctuation for Academic Writing course is an English for Academic Purposes course for students with a B1-C1 English level proficiency who want to focus on the grammar necessary for the effective writing of academic texts.

 

Content:

This course is focuses on the grammar used in academic journal articles, essays, and other academic texts. Academic grammar uses a limited number of tenses and focuses on developing your academic voice. The course begins with a review of verb tense use in an academic context before moving on to more complex structures like showing logical links, expressing, shades of meaning, and using relative clauses. Although useful outside academia, the grammar in this course is focused solely on the academic context.

 

Format:

This is a self-study with instructor support. Target group:

The B2 Business English and TOEIC Preparation course is suitable for students who have completed the B1.2 course (intermediate) or have approximately 500 classroom hours of English language lessons.

 

Content:

The B2 Business English and TOEIC Preparation language course is for students who want to expand on their previous English language knowledge at an upper intermediate level with a focus on the business context. The four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening are developed throughout the course. The course focuses on business vocabulary and administrative language and requisite grammar for business and administrative communication. The course includes preparation for the TOEIC test to be given at the end of the semester.

Students who have completed a general English language B2 course would find some of the course repetitive, but would learn new vocabulary and specialized communication activities for a business environment.

 

Assessment:

Regular and active participation in the class. Completion of homework assignments. Klausur on the last day of the class.

Beschreibung

How can professors at German universities be addressed correctly? What does a formal e-mail at the university look like? How do I prepare a conversation with a lecturer if I want to discuss the subject of my term paper?

Communication at the university is different in every country. It is based on hidden values, norms and role concepts. To avoid problems due to cultural and linguistic misunderstandings, we offer you this course.

An important element of academic culture in Germany is so-called "best academic practice". It describes what qualitatively and ethically good research work and teaching is. Plagiarism is therefore severely sanctioned in Germany. This course teaches you how to avoid plagiarism and how to quote correctly.

A course thrives on people meeting each other. It is therefore particularly important that you participate actively on a regular basis and are well prepared.

Semester hours: 2 SWS

Exam: Final paper

In the final paper you show that you have learnt how to structure a typical German “Hausarbeit” or term paper, that you know how to quote properly and avoid plagiarism.

Workload:
