Millions in Funding for Innovative Digital Teaching

The Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehr, a German foundation, is expected to provide more than €7 million in funding for the project "Innovation Learning Lab (i2L)" at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF). Over the next six years, the project will advance both traditional and digital teaching to the benefit oboth lecturers and students, including those training to enter the teaching profession.

Making teaching more courageous and engaging

EUF has a strong thematic focus on the educational sciences, Europe, sustainability, and transformation. Now, transformation is also coming to university teaching. “We are thrilled to be able to implement the Innovation Learning Lab with the support of the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre foundation. Together with and for our students, we want to make teaching more courageous and more engaging. This will make university study more exciting and boost students' career preparedness,” says Anke Wischmann, Vice President for Teaching and Learning at Europa-Universität Flensburg.

Working together to shape new ideas for academic study

As its core focus, the project brings together lecturers and students from disciplines across EUF, who work together to forge new pathways in university teaching, receiving both technical and academic support in the process. “The project gives students and instructors a chance to jointly shape tomorrow’s academic education and to test out new approaches in today’s classrooms,” explains Carlotta Kühnemund, one of the project coordinators at EUF. “Student participation is especially important to us. That’s how we ensure that we’re addressing the real challenges to students, and that the changes are directly felt by students.

Advancing teacher education

Teacher education, one of the university’s key focus areas, stands to reap special benefits from innovative teaching. It will extend the project’s reach well beyond the scope of the university itself, as prospective teachers take with them into the classroom their experiences with the tested methods. The Innovation Learning Lab offers lasting opportunities to embed new formats and teaching innovations, adapted to fit with increasing digitalization, into the university and the school system.

About the funding

The “Lehrarchitektur” (teaching architecture) program of the Stiftung Innnovation in der Hochschullehre supports the trial and structural integration of innovations in academic studies and teaching. Projects will run for up to six years, with a total funding volume of approximately €480 million, of which approximately €20 million will go to Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the Innovation Learning Lab (i2L) project at Europa-Universität Flensburg, three projects at universities in Lübeck will also receive funding.
