Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Education Funds Digital Learning Campus at Europa-Universität Flensburg with 2.2 Million Euros

Minister of Education Karin Prien ceremonially presented the grant during an event held at the IDEENREICH on campus. EUF will receive 2.2 million euros for the AILISH network project ("Artificial Intelligence Literacy and Computational Thinking in Schleswig-Holstein").

As part of the Digital Learning Campus network, EUF will lead this initiative, with participation from the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, represented by Dr. habil. Sven Tode, and NORDAKADEMIE, represented by Prof. Dr. Stefan Wiedmann.

EUF’s Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, Prof. Dr. Iulia-Karin Patrut, accepted the funding with gratitude. The universities will receive 1.6 million euros, while NORDAKADEMIE will receive 0.5 million euros.

The three institutions, receiving a combined 4.3 million euros, will collaborate in a joint network to make "Low-Threshold AI – Education and Computational Thinking for ALL" accessible. In addition to the Media Education Department (Prof. Dr. Christian Filk), EUF’s Institute for Vocational Education and Work (biat), led by Prof. Dr. Axel Grimm, is also involved.

Minister Prien emphasized: "I am pleased that these three partners are pursuing new paths with their networks here in Flensburg. They are making future skills surrounding AI accessible to everyone. This project is not only about learning but also about hands-on experimentation and applying new technologies—something that should definitely be enjoyable." The joint project has been recognized as an essential element for closer institutional networking and for building connections between universities, businesses, and the public.

Prof. Dr. Iulia-Karin Patrut expressed her thanks to all colleagues involved in the application and to the Minister for supporting this forward-looking project during these challenging times. She emphasized the importance of reflecting on AI developments through the humanities and social sciences to ensure the project’s contribution to democratic education and its promise of participation.

The approach taken in Flensburg, which combines educational, media, and digitalization research, is ideally suited for this purpose: "Europa-Universität Flensburg is recognized for its research in teacher education for general and vocational schools. With the AILISH project, it has the significant opportunity to further establish itself in the innovative fields of digital media education and accessible AI education. Our goal is to make AI accessible through tangible and experiential learning opportunities for a wide audience, particularly students and teachers. Through this project, we aim to enhance educational opportunities in Schleswig-Holstein."
