Canadian author Drew Hayden Taylor comes to Flensburg
A tragic plane crashleaves two women stranded and fighting for their lives. Later, Elmore Trent, a professor of Indigenous studies, finds himself entangled in an affair that's ruining his marriage; as Paul North plays in the IHL (Indigenous Hockey League), struggling to keep up with the game that's passing him by and Detective Ruby Birch is chasing a string of gruesome murders, with clues that conspicuously lead her to both Elmore and Paul. And then there's Fabiola Halan, former journalist-turned-author and famed survivor of a plane crash that sparked a nationwide tour promoting her book. What starts off as a series of subtle connections between isolated characters quickly takes a menacing turn, as it becomes increasingly clear that someone—or something—is hunting them all.
Drew Hayden Taylor, award-winning Canadian author and playwright, combines traditional Indigenous stories with the modern streets of Toronto in his novel. Entertainment, crime, thriller and horror are combined in a fast-paced narrative with true-to-life characters. Along the way, he deals with themes such as displacement, colonial history and trauma and provides a humorous look at contemporary Indigenous literature.
The Canadian author is now coming to Flensburg as part of the new “Canada on Campus” event series. On November 4th at 5 pm at the Europa-Universität Flensburg, building Talin 007, Mitscherlich-Nielsen Straße 1a, 24943 Flensburg, Drew Hayden Taylor will read from his novel COLD, the first of his 36 novels to be translated into German. The reading will be held in German and English, and translator Leo Strohm, who translated the novel into German, will also be part of the event.
The reading is organized by the Institute for English and American Studies at the EUF. The institute, which focuses on indigenous American topics, also devotes its research and teaching to Canadian literature and culture. In cooperation with bookstore at Plack (“Freunde fürs Lesen”), the Canada Council and Merlin-Verlag, the indigenous Canadian author has been invited this year.
