Academic Freedom in the Transatlantic Context" Panel Discussion

HZ1, Hörsaalzentrum

Add to calendar

As academic freedom comes under increasing pressure across the globe, this panel examines its current status and dimensions in both Europe and the United States. In light of recent U.S. political developments—including the resurgence of culture wars, ideological restrictions on curricula, and threats to university autonomy—questions about academic integrity and freedom are more urgent than ever. Meanwhile, the politicization of higher education and the weakening of academic independence in countries like Hungary pose parallel challenges in Europe.

This transatlantic discussion brings together scholars with first-hand experience and analytical insight into the intersections of academia, politics, culture and public discourse.

Panelists:

  • Imke Meyer, University of Illinois Chicago (Prof. of  Germanic Studies/ Literature, critical theory, gender studies)
  • Heidi Schlipphacke, University of Illinois Chicago (Prof. of Germanic Studies/ Literature, film, cultural theory)
  • Dezso Mate, EUF (Post-Doc Researcher / Science of racism, Memory studies)
