Study Abroad

Semester Abroad in the Master Sustainable Energy

In the Master's programme Sustainable Energy, you have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad – either through a partner university, by organising the stay independently, or as part of an internship.

For more information about an international stay, please visit the International Office of EUF.

 International Office EUF

Option 1: Studying at a Partner University

Students of the M.Eng. Sustainable Energy programme have the opportunity to complete a semester abroad at a partner university. Two options are available:

  1. Programme-Specific Partner Universities: Currently, there are partnerships with the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil), the Pontifical Xavierian University (Colombia), and Mälardalen University (Sweden). We continuously expand programme-specific partnerships to offer you attractive exchange opportunities.

  2. Other Partner Universities of EUF: Additionally, you can choose from the broader network of partner universities at EUF, even if they are not specifically tailored to the programme. It is important to ensure in advance that the course selection aligns with the content of your programme.

An up-to-date overview of the partner universities for the M.Eng. Sustainable Energy can be found under on the page of the International Office. Please refer to the websites of the respective partner universities for information on semester dates and course content.

Option 2: Self-Organised Semester Abroad

If you prefer a specific university or internship, you can also organise your study abroad experience independently – either for a semester or as an internship, as a so-called freemover. In this case, you are responsible for the research, application, and funding.

Please note that freemover stays may incur tuition fees, which are not covered by Erasmus+ in contrast to partner universities.

Once you have found a suitable university, please contact the programme coordination to align the academic recognition of your studies. For organisational and administrative questions, the International Center will support you.

Option 3: Internship Abroad

Alternatively, you can voluntarily undertake an internship abroad. This allows you to experience the country-specific professional world and encounter entirely different aspects of life and social groups compared to studying at a foreign university. International internships are therefore highly valued by potential future employers. Through internships and international jobs, you can also acquire professional language skills. Awareness of other cultures and the experiences gained in different countries are additional assets that can make it easier to transition into your professional career.

Further Information

If you wish to study at a partner university in the autumn or spring semester, you can apply here for one or more preferred universities (multiple selections are possible). Please be aware of the application deadlines for each partner university. The selection is made by the International Center at EUF. If you are offered a place, you must accept it within the specified deadline, as it may otherwise be allocated to someone else.

In consultation with the programme coordination, you will then arrange a Learning Agreement that includes your preferred modules at the partner university. This will allow for the later recognition of the credits earned. If you have any questions about the application process, the International Center is happy to assist you.

An international stay at one of our partner universities can be financially and organisationally supported through the Erasmus+ programme. This applies to all European as well as a large portion of the non-European partner universities of EUF. Further information on funding opportunities, such as the PROMOS scholarship, can be found here.

Additionally, the EUM/EnWi Association of Energy Sciences annually awards scholarships for stays abroad.

For more information, please visit the website of the International Office at EUF.

Information about the recognition of credits earned abroad can be found under For Students.

  • Doctoral researchers: Doctoral researchers are also authorised examiners, without the need for additional university lecturers to be involved.
  • External examiners: In exceptional cases, supervision can be provided by external examiners. These must be approved by the examination board. At least one supervisor must have taught in the relevant subject area (see § 8 (1) PStO).

The choice of supervisor is made in consultation with the programme coordination. Early contact is recommended to jointly define the topic and methodology.

  • The Master's thesis can also be completed as a group project upon request.
  • In this case, it must be clearly indicated which part of the thesis was written by each individual in order to enable an individual assessment (see § 11 (3) PStO).

The Master's thesis must be submitted on time in the required format. This includes:

  • A digital version (e.g., PDF format), which must be submitted via upload or email.
  • Printed copies, if required by the supervisor (see § 11 (2) PStO).
After submission, you will receive a written confirmation of the receipt of your thesis.

Important notes regarding submission:

  • For postal delivery, the receipt date at the student services (SPA) will be considered the submission date, not the postmark.
  • The Master's thesis must include a signed declaration of originality (§11 (2), RaPO §24 (7)).
  • For printed copies, the signature must be handwritten (no digital signatures).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about your studies? Our FAQs provide quick and easy answers to the most important topics.

Application & Admission

There are different requirements depending on the chosen specialisation.

For the Engineering specialisation, you need a relevant university degree (B.Sc./Diploma) with at least 210 ECTS credits in an engineering-related field, as well as very good English skills (minimum level B2.2).

For the Transition specialisation, the same requirements apply, plus an additional international experience of at least four months during your Bachelor's studies, either as a study abroad period or an internship.

You can find the detailed admission requirements here.

The application deadlines depend on the semester:

For the spring semester, applications are open from 1 December to 15 January. For the autumn semester, the application period runs from 15 May to 15 July. These deadlines apply to the Transition and Engineering specialisations.

International applicants apply through the same online portal as German students. All application documents must be submitted completely and on time, in either German or English. After admission, you can request an official confirmation (“Confirmation of Admission”) to support your visa application. Please make sure to inform yourself early about visa, insurance, and residence requirements.

In the case of a conditional admission, certain documents are still missing – for example, your Bachelor’s certificate, transcripts for individual courses, or other academic records. These must be submitted to the Student Secretariat by the deadline stated in your admission letter.

The admission may also come with conditions, such as successfully completing bridge courses. These must be completed within the first two semesters. Please coordinate with the programme coordinator to determine which courses can be recognised. Bridge courses will appear on your transcript but do not affect your final Master’s grade.

These messages in the application portal usually do not mean that your application has been rejected.

“Documents missing” indicates that certain required documents are still missing or could not be clearly assigned. Please check the portal to see exactly which documents are affected and upload them if necessary.

“Temporarily excluded” may appear while your application is still under review by the admissions committee. If it also says: “The documents are pending a decision by the admissions committee – no consequences,” your application remains valid. In both cases, no further action is required; the status will be updated once the review is complete.

Yes – submitting documents at a later stage is possible in certain cases, especially if you apply before completing your Bachelor's degree. In this case, missing documents such as your degree certificate or certificate of de-registration can be submitted later, by the deadline stated in your admission letter.

Other individual documents (e.g. language certificates) may also be submitted at a later stage, depending on the specific conditions. Please refer to the application portal and your admission notice for details. Make sure your application is still formally complete and correct in order to be considered.

The bridge courses you need to take will be specified individually in your admission letter. Typically, you will choose suitable courses from the Bachelor’s or Master’s curriculum to close academic gaps – for example in energy economics or engineering. The selection is made in consultation with the programme coordinator. Bridge courses will appear on your transcript but do not count towards your final Master’s grade.

Further information on bridge courses is available from the programme coordination.

Bridge courses that you take as part of a conditional admission are intended to help you meet the academic prerequisites for the Master’s programme. These courses should be successfully completed within the first two semesters.

The results of the bridge courses will appear on your transcript of records but do not count towards your final Master’s grade. They are considered an enrolment requirement, not part of the regular curriculum.

There are no tuition fees at Europa-Universität Flensburg. However, a semester fee must be paid each term as part of the re-registration process. This fee covers the nationwide semester ticket (Deutschlandticket), the contribution to the student services organisation, and the student union (AStA).

The exact amount may vary slightly. For the winter semester 2025/26, the fee is €309.30; for the spring semester 2025, it was €276.90. Payment is required for re-registration or enrolment and must be made via bank transfer to EUF. Detailed payment information can be found on the Student Secretariat’s website.

The Schleswig-Holstein semester ticket (Deutschlandticket) is included in the semester fee. After you have paid the fee during the re-registration period, you can order the ticket online. You will need your university email address for this. The ticket is valid from 1 March (spring semester) or 1 September (winter semester) of the respective term.

No, students generally only pay the semester contribution once, even if they are temporarily enrolled at two universities during the transition from a Bachelor's to a Master's degree (e.g. at HS Flensburg and EUF).

If dual enrolment is required for organisational reasons, it is possible to apply for a refund of any duplicate payments, such as:
– Deutschlandticket (e.g. €176.40): Refund via the AStA
– Student services contribution (e.g. €79): Refund may be possible upon request to the student services organisation.

Course Registration

After enrolment, you will receive an information sheet with your personal login credentials for the IT services of Europa-Universität Flensburg. This includes:

– Your EUF email address
– Login details for Moodle and other online platforms
