Using Curatescape to Tell Lesser-Known Histories in Public Humanities

Manuela Engstler, Europa-Universität Flensburg

This project is based on the Saint Louis University (SLU) campus and its longstanding history in an ethnically and racially divided city that is St. Louis, MO. It utilizes various digital humanities tools to help highlight previously unknown and lesser-known histories. The project was envisioned by students who later also founded the Graduate Public Humanities group on campus. They wanted to be able to tell these stories and allow the surrounding community and stakeholders of these histories the access, but also the agency to spread awareness of what has happened on this campus since the founding in "1818." This project is based on various historical research methods, including archival research and oral histories, but also utilizes newer methods, such as social media scraping to record the more recent pasts. In this talk we will not only discuss the background of this project, but also how digital humanities tools allow researchers the opportunity to engage a broader public with their research and not just the ivory tower of academia.

Alle Interessierten sind herzlich zur Teilnahme eingeladen.
