How did European colonialism work? What long-term effects did it have on Europe and the world? And who had to pay for European domination, both literally and figuratively? Although these questions have been debated for decades, they have recently received renewed scholarly and public attention. What is still lacking, however, is a comparative perspective that would allow us to analyze the similarities and differences in the methods employed by the various colonial powers.

The international conference "Taxation and the Colonial State" aims to build such a comparative framework with regard to the area of colonial finance by fostering discussion among scholars who have focused primarily on individual colonial powers or colonies.

Conference topics will also include self-assertion and resistance in the face of colonial taxation, the role of private business and infrastructure projects, and a discussion of the long-term effects of colonialism. In addition, there will be two keynote lectures by renowned specialists in the fields of economic history and fiscal policy. Prof. Dr. Anne Booth (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) will speak on "Comparative Research on Colonial Finance: Achievements, Unanswered Questions, and Future Directions". In a second keynote, Prof. Dr. Martin Daunton (University of Cambridge) will explore  the issue of "Colonial Taxation and Public Finance in the Age of Globalized Capitalism".

Funded by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the conference is organized by Marc Buggeln and Jan Kreutz (both Forschungsstelle für regionale Zeitgeschichte und Public History) as part of their DFG-funded research project "Die Konturen des Kolonialstaats. Steuer- und Haushaltspolitik in den deutschen Kolonien 1884-1914".

Wie funktionierte der europäische Kolonialismus? Welche langfristigen Auswirkungen hatte er auf Europa und die Welt? Wer musste im wörtlichen und im übertragenen Sinne für die europäische Vorherrschaft bezahlen? Diese Fragen werden in der Wissenschaft seit Jahrzehnten diskutiert und sind in jüngster Zeit nun auch stärker in den Blick der Öffentlichkeit gerückt. Was jedoch nach wie vor fehlt, ist eine vergleichende Perspektive, die es erlaubt, Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in den Methoden der verschiedenen Kolonialmächte zu analysieren.

Die internationale Konferenz "Taxation and the Colonial State" will einen Beitrag zur Entwicklung eines solchen vergleichenden Rahmens für den Bereich der Kolonialfinanzen leisten, indem sie die Diskussion zwischen Wissenschaftlern fördert, die sich bisher vor allem auf einzelne Kolonialmächte oder Kolonien konzentriert haben.

Die Konferenz wird zudem Selbstbehauptung und Widerstand gegenüber kolonialer Besteuerung, die Rolle von Privatunternehmen und Infrastrukturprojekten sowie die langfristigen Folgen des Kolonialismus thematisieren.
