The social dynamics of climate change: Findings of the Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook on options for societal transformation

The global shift towards climate neutrality has been decided politically and is technologically possible. Nevertheless, implementation is stagnating, and even setbacks can be observed time and again. The goal set by the international community of limiting global warming to 1.5°C or at least well below 2°C is thus moving further and further away. Against this background, the Hamburg Cluster of Excellence CLICCS has developed an analytical framework that examines the social and political drivers of a global transformation towards climate neutrality and assesses the plausibility of a global climate turnaround based on the dynamics of these drivers.
Prof. Dr. Stefan Aykut, sociologist and co-author of the study, will present the results of the last assessment, which was published in 2023 as part of the Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook. Subsequently, the question will be asked what follows from the plausibility analysis for 1.5 degrees and what are the societal hurdles, but also the levers and opportunities for a socio-ecological transformation. In addition to the global level, the German climate change will also be addressed.
