Description
This lecture introduces students to the most influential theories of socio-economic development and their underlying assumptions about progress, well-being, and the good life. Starting from competing definitions of 'development', the course surveys grand theories of development, neoclassical growth models, institutional economics, Marxist and dependency theories, and the role of technology and innovation. A recurring theme is the theory-ladenness of measurement: how the choice of indicators and frameworks is always a normative choice, not a neutral one. The final sessions address the relationship between development and the natural environment, including planetary boundaries, the degrowth debate, and the limits of green growth strategies. Post-colonial critiques of development discourse are considered throughout.
The course is taught in English and is part of the B.A. International Management programme. Further information, lecture slides, reading lists, and interactive materials are available on the course website.
