EMERGE at EUF selects five winning projects in the 2026 Collaborative Initiatives Call
As part of the EMERGE Collaborative Initiatives Call 2026, Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) is supporting five projects that work with regional, national and international partners to make concrete contributions to a sustainable, inclusive and socially cohesive society. The winning projects were presented and recognised at the EMERGE HUB on 8 September 2026.
The selected initiatives demonstrate the diversity of the EMERGE network, bringing together academic expertise and practical collaboration in the region and beyond.
Bicycle Day Brings Safer and More Sustainable Mobility to Campus
Led by Simon Laros, Energy and Climate Manager at EUF, this project aims to make cycling on campus safer and more attractive. Together with ADFC Flensburg, the EUF AStA, Jens Thiesen and local bicycle shops, the project team is planning a campus Bicycle Day. Activities will include free bicycle registration, safety checks, a bicycle light campaign, information services and a bicycle skills course. The Bicycle Day is intended to become a regular event and contribute to more sustainable mobility on campus.
Experiencing Democracy Together in Flensburg and Schleswig-Holstein
This project by Prof. Dr Felix Butzlaff and Soraya El Janabi from Flüchtlingshilfe Flensburg e.V., with academic support from Prof. Dr Anke Wischmann, brings together EUF students and people with refugee backgrounds. Through workshops and visits to Flensburg Town Hall, institutions representing the Danish minority and the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament, participants will explore political participation and democratic institutions together. The experiences will subsequently feed into a transferable workshop format for civic education.
Trusted Multilingual Guidance for Newcomers to Germany
Together with NRB Germany, this project is developing a multilingual digital platform for international students, skilled workers, families and others who are new to Germany. The project is led by Md. Anower Hossain Sagor, an EUF alumnus, and Mansi Mishra, an EUF master's student, in collaboration with Podmoney GmbH. The platform will provide reliable information on topics such as housing, studying, healthcare, employment, language learning and public administration. The offer will be complemented by videos, expert interviews, webinars and downloadable resources.
Art Education Puts the Sustainable Development Goals in Motion
The project led by Prof. Dr Friederike Rückert from EUF's Art Education programme uses artistic practice and visual education to make the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals tangible in the classroom. In collaboration with the Institute for Quality Development at Schools in Schleswig-Holstein (IQSH), the University of Limerick, EUF's Department of Art and Visual Media, and EUF art education students, the project will develop bilingual teaching materials, workshops, a public exhibition and a digital collection of resources for schools and universities.
Students Turn Food Poverty into Food Participation
Led by Prof. Dr Ulrike Johannsen and Prof. Dr Birgit Peuker, this project develops educational activities focusing on food justice, sustainable food systems and health promotion. Students and partners from Germany, Ireland and France will work with schools, educational institutions and organisations in the fields of food and health. The project plans to develop at least four educational modules, multilingual Open Educational Resources, an online conference and project documentation that can continue to be used beyond the funding period.
Working Together for a Sustainable Future
Through the Collaborative Initiatives Call, European University Alliance EMERGE supports collaborations that connect university knowledge with social engagement. The five selected projects exemplify the values of EMERGE: sustainability, inclusion, resilience, multilingualism, cultural diversity, solidarity and social engagement.
