Obituary for Dr. Kerstin Neubarth, Former EUF Senior Advisor for European and International Affairs
We mourn the loss of our Senior Advisor for European and International Affairs, Dr. Kerstin Neubarth, who sadly passed away on February 14, 2022 after battling illness. A staff member of Europa-Universität Flensburg since late 2018, Dr. Neubarth had extensive experience and expertise in the area of international research collaboration and funding and was an invaluable support to her unit. The university owes her a special debt of gratitude for her excellent initiative in helping to internationalize teacher education, for which she did conceptual work so innovative that it even convinced third-party funding institutions to finance EUF projects.
Dr. Neubarth never talked much about these and other achievements. Part of her understanding of professionalism was a friendly reserve that made working with her so pleasant. We all miss her, not only because of her great professionalism and competence, but also because we have lost such a kind colleague.
Kerstin Neubarth’s success in the area of academic support was no doubt aided by her own scholarly curiosity. At the University of Cologne, she earned both a master's degree with honors in musicology, phonetics, and Italian philology in 1998 and a doctorate in musicology in 2004. She was very interested in the connection between brain research and musicology, continuing to pursue this interest through her study of musical knowledge representation even while working as an academic staff member. A Lise Meitner Fellowship enabled her to do an in-depth study of "Research and Teaching in Cognitive Musicology." In 2006, these interests led her to City University London, where she began research and coordination work in the area of technology-enhanced music education. In 2008, she started a new position as Academic Enterprise Officer at Canterbury Christ Church University. The condolences we have received from there show the esteem with which Dr. Neubarth is remembered by her colleagues, including those from other workplaces-
We, too, will continue to remember Kerstin with respect and appreciation for her work and special way of being. We deeply mourn her far too early death; her life shines the brighter for it in our memory.
