What’s it all about?

The aim of the Postdoctoral Fellowships is to equip postdoctoral researchers with complementary professional skills for their future careers through the implementation of a personalised research project. International, interdisciplinary and intersectoral mobility is the central element here.

What needs to be considered?

The Postdoctoral Fellowships are divided into two different programmes:

  • European Postdoctoral Fellowships are available at a host institution in an EU Member State or at a host institution in a Horizon Europe Associated Country.

  • Global Postdoctoral Fellowships include an "outgoing phase" and thus a host institution in a non-European and non-Associated Country and a mandatory return phase to a host institution based in an EU Member State or in an Associated Country of Horizon Europe.

Themobility rule applies to all beneficiaries: they may not have lived or worked in the host institution’s country for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to the submission deadline (for Global Postdoctoral Fellowships, the reference is the host institution of the "outgoing phase").

What is funded?

Funding is provided for European Postdoctoral Fellowships with a duration of 12 to 24 months and Global Postdoctoral Fellowships with a duration of 24 to 36 months, consisting of a 12 to 24-month outgoing phase and a 12-month return phase. An additional period of up to six months at a non-academic institution based in an EU Member State or in a Horizon Europe Associated Country may be requested in both Fellowship programmes in justified cases.

Postdoctoral researchers will receive an employment contract (usually full-time) from the host institution

Science with and for society will help citizens, organisations and territories to open a new chapter of their development through joint research and innovation activities in five strategic orientations. It will contribute to the implementation of Responsible Research and Innovation through institutional governance changes in Research Performing (RPOs) and Funding Organisations (RFOs), focusing on developing new partnerships and involving researchers, policy makers, citizens and industry. It will step up support for gender equality in R&I policy by promoting institutional changes and focusing on key areas of research to advance gender equality. It will build on the territorial dimension of SWAFS partnerships by opening up R&I broadly to society according to specific territorial contexts, where territories are understood as geographical areas sharing common features (e.g. economic, social, cultural, environmental). It will explore and support citizen science in a broad sense, encouraging citizens and other stakeholders to participate in all stages of R&I. Finally, it will build the knowledge base for SwafS through a combination of totally bottom-up and open topics and targeted topics including two looking for the first time at science communication and due and proportionate precaution.

Fellowships/ Stipendien

DFG Walter-Benjamin Stipend and Position/ Deadline: anytime

The Walter Benjamin Programme enables researchers in the postdoctoral training phase to independently conduct their own research project at a location of their choice. The project can be carried out at a research institution in Germany or abroad, with the host institution providing support for the project.

Purpose

By securing funding for their own research project, particularly qualified postdoctoral researchers pave the way for the next stages of their increasingly independent research career and exercise autonomy. The programme thus promotes early research careers with the aim of fostering the mobility and thematic development that are crucial in this career phase; therefore, the programme generally requires that the applicant change his or her research institution.

Eligibility Requirements

Only postdoctoral researchers at an early career phase are eligible to apply to this programme. The project may not be based at an entity that is for-profit or that does not permit the publication of findings in a generally accessible form.

Type and Extent of Funding

The type and extent of funding depend on what modules are selected. Fellowships are provided to conduct research projects abroad and positions are provided to conduct research projects in Germany (in the category "postdoctoral researcher or comparable") (or for a temporary substitute clinician position in the category "medical research assistant"). Regardless of which funding type is selected, a general allowance for direct project costs (including travel and publication costs) and, where applicable, additional funding associated with high production costs (book format) will be granted. The fellowship amount is made up of the basic allowance and, where applicable, additional benefits such as a foreign allowance, cost of living allowance and benefits for parents. Interner LinkAward Calculator

The institution at which the project is located should cover additional project needs. Particularly for projects conducted in Germany, the host researcher should provide project and career development support.

Funding Duration: As a rule, up to two years

Special provisions apply for individuals applying for a Walter Benjamin fellowship (abroad):

Funding abroad can only be provided if researchers are integrated into Germany’s academic research system. This is the case if, immediately prior to submitting a proposal, they have worked as a researcher in Germany for a continuous period of at least three years during their doctoral and/or postdoctoral phase.

If researchers are already based abroad, funding can be provided abroad if they have completed the majority of their schooling and higher education in Germany and, as of proposal time, have not spent more than three years abroad for research purposes after completing their doctorate in Germany or abroad.

Furthermore, they must not have worked longer than one year at the host institution selected for the Walter Benjamin fellowship as of proposal time.

Forms and Guidelines

CURRENT INFORMATION: The Foundation will temporarily (until at least 2025) not award any post-doctoral fellowships!

Postdoc stipends from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation are an instrument used to support highly qualified individual junior scholars with doctoral degrees in a research project for a limited period of time. These stipends are intended, for example, to enable scholars to familiarise themselves with a new field of research and/or to write a scholarly article for publication. Excellent postdoctoral students are to be enabled through a stipend to concentrate exclusively on a project of their choice for a maximum of one year. Projects intended solely for the preparation/revision of dissertations for printing are not supported.

  • Basic information and conditions
    • To be able to apply for a postdoc stipend, the doctoral degree procedure must have been completed with the defense of the work (disputation) or doctoral viva (Rigorosum); a (preliminary) degree certificate is to be submitted.
    • The applicant should generally not have received his or her doctoral degree more than one or two years previously.
    • The planned project should generally comprise a maximum period of one year.
    • The research stipend should be associated with a scholarly project that is independent of any outside influence and be based on individual initiative and be carried out at a school of higher learning or at a non-profit research facility.
    • No stipends are awarded for doctoral dissertations or "Habilitationen" (post-doctoral research) or to complete such works to follow up support through other institutions; nor can stipends be applied for to support students at the bachelor’s or master’s level.
    • The foundation generally does not accept any applications for projects if applications are being filed with other institutions offering support at the same time to ease the burden on its experts assessing applications. An application that is refused by another institution can be filed with the foundation along with a note explaining why it was refused.

It is generally not possible to revise applications that have been rejected by the Foundation.

Description:

The Maria Weber Grant serves to support outstanding early-stage researchers in the postdoc phase. With the Maria Weber Grant, the Hans Böckler Foundation provides funding for junior professors and post-doctoral researchers for a limited period of one or two semesters. The target group is outstanding early-stage researchers from German universities from all disciplines in whose academic career the Hans Böckler Foundation has a particular interest from both a research and a higher education policy perspective. Junior professors must have already undergone a positive interim evaluation at the time of application. Habilitation candidates must enclose a specialist report; in addition, a peer review procedure will be initiated by the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung.

Funding objective
Applicants may apply for a temporary partial replacement for up to 12 months to take over parts of the teaching duties in order to gain the freedom to carry out their research. A further prerequisite is that the university is prepared to release the applicant from parts of the teaching for the period applied for. If possible, the temporary deputy should be given the opportunity to further his or her qualifications.

With funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the European Union (FP7/Marie Curie Actions/COFUND), the DAAD initiated the "Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience" (PRIME) funding programme in 2014 and has since supported international mobility in the postdoctoral phase through temporary positions at German universities instead of traditional scholarships. The funding comprises a 12-month phase abroad and a six-month integration phase at a German higher education institution, where the funding recipients are employed as postdoctoral researchers for the entire funding period.

Researcher groups

The EU has been funding basic and frontier research in Europe through the European Research Council (ERC) since 2007. Special features of ERC funding include, in particular, scientific autonomy in the design of the funding lines, the thematic openness of the calls and the funding of individual researchers. In Horizon Europe, the ERC is again located within the first pillar named "Excellent Science" and has a budget of EUR 16 billion for the 7-year duration of the 9th Research Framework Program (this corresponds to 17% of the total budget of Horizon Europe).

Researchers of any nationality and from all scientific disciplines are eligible to apply to the ERC, which provides a total of 5 funding lines with different target groups:

The ERC Starting Grants for researchers between 2 and 7 years after their doctorate are open to post-docs, junior professors and professors at an early stage of their career. Funding is available for projects with a duration of up to 5 years and a funding volume of up to 1.5 million euros.
