The Comparative Political Economy department focuses on the institutional regulation of labour markets, education and training systems, corporate governance and the conditions for innovation. Institutions are understood as formal and informal rules that influence human behaviour. By analysing such rules, the aim is to gain a better understanding of problems that arise at the interfaces between economics, politics and society. These include issues such as unemployment, debt and socio-economic inequality.
With the establishment of the Comparative Political Economy Department, the IIM has also created a new regional focus on the economies of Southern Europe in order to further strengthen intercultural comparison in research and teaching. The department's goal is to analyze the institutional governance of markets in culturally diverse economic settings and to disseminate this knowledge to students. With its research focus on the economies of Southern Europe, the department supports the thematic orientation of the Europa-Universität Flensburg and thus also contributes to answering current questions in European Studies.
