BrownBag Meeting

Yuichi Miyamoto: "Weltansichten" and "Wissenschaft". Recapturing Wilhelm von Humboldt’s "Bildungtheorie" as the foundation of his Didactical Concept in 1809

Abstract: Through examining Humboldt’s concept for educational reform, "Wissenschaft" was the very foundation for all of his concepts: curriculum, didactics, teacher education, school structure etc. With the deep connection to his Bildung theory, Wissenschaft is understood as a medium, method or perspective which allows man interact with world. In the presentation, Miyamoto will focus on how Humboldt understood his Bildung theory in relation to "Wissenschaft".

While Humboldt’s basic findings in his Bildung theory are repeatedly authorized throughout the centuries, taking a closer look at his writing will lead to a mostly ignored point, which however grabbed his most crucial interest for his inquiry on humankind: that is; the existence of the "variety" of "ways", "modes" and "methods" of mediating I and World. At the same moment man would understand the world from the perspective of history as well as he could also observe the nature by mathematical calculation. Political, economic, aesthetic, religious, educational confrontation to the world are also open to everyone who form their own thoughts, behaviours and cultural norms on those specific ways. The inquiry on Bildung – the issue of how human becomes human – is then the inquiry on the variety of methods and ways of people interacting with the world. This insight located the meaning and significance of "Wissenschaft" as "Weltansicht(en)", and revealed how people create the culture and significance of each field and discipline.
