XXVII Scientific Instrument Symposium: Instruments and the ФEmpire of Man over ThingsХ
Quelle: https://rijksmuseumboerhaave.nl/sic2018/ [rev. 17.10.2021].
XXXVIII Scientific Instrument Symposium: Instruments at crossroad
The XXXVIII Symposium of the Scientific Instrument Commission took place from the 23d to the 27th of September 2019 in Havana, Cuba. It was jointly organized by the University of Havana, the Cuban Chemical Society, the Cuban Physics Society and the Office of the Historian of Havana. It took place at the University of Havana Convention Center and at scientific institutions in Old Havana.Symposium theme: Instruments at crossroadsThe invention, construction and use of scientific instruments are often strongly affected by external conditions that depend on time period and geographical location. Climate, for instance, may influence the choice, use and life not only of meteorological instruments but also of all kind of instruments Р think of polar, tropical or equatorial locations. Changes in local (or global) economics, politics or agricultural and industrial development, may also shape instrumentsХ design and making Р think of the disruption created by electric trams passing close to urban physics laboratories. We might wonder how such crossroads may bring to instruments obsolescence, innovation, or reconfiguration how are scientific instruments adapted, reconfigured or created in response to changing external circumstances? XXXIX Scientific Instrument Symposium: Spaces for Instruments
Ursprünglich geplant: London (UK). Wegen Covid-19 als virtuelle Konferenz gehalten. The Фspatial turnХ in history of science and historical geography has seen fruitful exploration of the situatedness of knowledge production and practice. Instrument historians have paid close attention to how instruments have been made, used and understood in a variety of spaces. This yearХs theme reflects some current interests of our host institutions. The Science MuseumХs new Science City 1550-1800 gallery explores how scientific instrument making and experimental practice shaped, and were shaped by, the growing city of London. The forthcoming Royal Museums Greenwich Royal Observatory 350 project will explore the legacy of one of the most iconic sites in instrument history. Museums are also in their own right significant spaces for the preservation, study and public interpretation of scientific instruments. The theme also builds on excellent discussions at recent SIC Symposia which have explored instruments at the crossroads, infrastructure, global/local and east/west narratives.Quelle: https://www.scientific-instrument-commission.org/sic-conferences/item/xxxix-scientific-instrument-symposium [rev. 17.10.2021].
