Abstract:

Living together. When individuals organise into groups

People come together all the time, and most of us can say this from experience. Indeed, being part of groups like sports teams, music bands, cultural associations and universities is very common. But how do we organise ourselves into groups? In what contexts do we do so? And what can we achieve together as a group? Moreover, organised groups such as orchestras, charities and companies are made up of members, but are the groups more than their members? Do they have abilities and powers that we lack? In my talk I will raise such questions and offer some philosophical insights to help us explore and better understand our life in groups.
