With the Bachelor’s Thesis, students demonstrate that they are able to work on a problem from the subject area of the degree program using the required methods within a defined period of time. This period of time consists of 4 months.

Students register for the colloquium class via Studiport, the same way that they register in any other course of the study program.

However, registration for the thesis is made directly in the Examination Office using a specific form for that purpose.

Important Information: You need to be registered as a student at the moment that you hand in your thesis. If you plan to hand in your thesis after the end of the 6th semester (that is, after the end of August), you need to have paid the semester fees in time.

How to register for the thesis:

FIRST

To register for the thesis you need to use a specific form prepared by the Examination Office. You can find the form here.

You need to fill in:
- your identification,
- the title of the Bachelor’s thesis (Please make sure that the titles is grammatically accurate and using correct spelling. This title will then be written in your final certificate with the exact wording that you have on your registration.)
- the names of the 1st and 2nd supervisor/examiner (legible), their signatures and dates of signature (If there is a difficulty or impossibility to obtain the needed signatures, the supervisor/examiner can also confirm via email that they are supervising your thesis. For this, when you send your registration to the Examination Office via email, put them in CC. so that they can confirm the supervision of that specific thesis that you are registering)
- Your signature and date of signature.

SECOND

Send the thesis registration document correctly filled to the examination office via email, per post or in person.

THIRD

Your Thesis registration will be sent to the EUCS Examination Committee for approval.

FOURTH

Once it is approved, your will receive an email from the Examination Office with the deadline for handing in the thesis, with instructions on how and where to hand it in, with a deadline to check if everything is correct with the registration, etc.

FIFTH

From that point on, you are free to start writing your thesis.

Thesis timeline (example)

FIRST: take your time to think about a topic and find the lecturers that will supervise your thesis. Plan ca. 1 to 3 months for finding the topic, contacting the potential supervisors, talking to them, eventually adjusting the thesis topic, etc.

Before meeting with the desired supervisor, you should already have an idea of a possible topic you would like to write about and of the possible methods needed to answer the question to be researched. Only after that should you approach a potential supervisor.

The first contact should be made via email, scheduling an appointment to talk about the possibility of supervision and, if possible, with the ideas gathered so far.

In the meeting you should already try to fix a title for the thesis with the first supervisor, so that you can already have a title when meeting the second supervisor.

SECOND: Once you have your topic, your supervisors, and the registration document signed, you can register for your thesis.

THIRD: Your registration needs to be checked by the EUCS Examination Committee. This can take up to 1 week in complicated semester times.

FORTH: Once the Examination Committee has confirmed your topic, you will receive an email from the Examination Office with the deadline to hand in your thesis. You now have 4 months to write the thesis.

FIFTH: When you finish the thesis, within the given 4-month deadline, you need to hand in the thesis to the Examination Office. Please pay attention to the thesis handing in instructions in the email mentioned in the FORTH step.
The thesis needs to be handed in on paper, in 3 copies, each with a digital version of the thesis and each eith a signed anti-plagiarism declaration.
You can hand in your thesis in person or per post and exclusively to the Examinations Office. The examinations office responsible for EUCS is the SPA IIM.
Upon the reception of your thesis, it will be stamped, to guarantee the fulfilment of the deadline.
Sending the thesis via email or directly to your supervisor(s) cannot be considered.

SIXTH: The Examination Office will then send the thesis to your supervisors for them to correct. The official correction time is 8 weeks.

SEVENTH: At some point between handing in the thesis and receiving your grade, your work will be checked by anti-plagiarism software.

EIGHTH: Once your thesis is corrected, the grade will be inserted in Studiport and you have completed your studies. From that point on, you can request your final certificates. This request is made online.
Please account for a time of ca. 2 to 3 weeks for your final certificate to be ready to be picked up. The final certificate cannot be sent by post and needs to be picked up in person at the university either by the respective student or by someone else with a power of attorney.

Supervisor(s)

The thesis is overseen by a supervisor and independently assessed by the supervisor and the examiner. The supervisor and the examiner can be lecturers academically linked to the EUF and particularly from EUCS. At least one of the two must regularly teach in the field of the thesis topic.
Freelance instructors (Lehrbeaftragte) cannot supervise theses.
The EUCS Examination Committee needs to previously decide on any exception to these rules on a case-by-case basis.
