Literary translator Patricia Klobusiczky, a visiting scholar with the Romance Seminar at  Europa-Universität Flensburg this fall semester, at will give various talks and workshops during her stay.

On November 4-5 and December 2-3, Ms. Klobusiczky will give the block seminar "Finger weg vom Fleischbrötchen - Literarisches Übersetzen zwischen Text und Kontext." The course is open to anyone who is interested in the theory or practice of literary translation.

The seminar will address basic questions of literary translation. What happens during translation? Is there such a thing as the "right" translation? Context is everything: Today, we tend to think of strict vegetarianism when we hear the warning "stay away from the meat bun." In 1950s, however, the phrase might well have applied to those translators of American novels who resolutely rendered the word "hamburger" for German readers.
