Of science and change -Center for Research on Sustainability and Transformation opened
The Center for Research on Sustainability and Transformation (CREST) was officially opened. The research center pools the scientific expertise of the EUF's third profile area: researchers here focus on a world in which the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, social inequality and supply conflicts are progressing and investigate approaches to social, ecological, economic and spatial transformation.
Creating a transition to a more sustainable future with interdisciplinary research
"The research center is interdisciplinary. In order to understand the economic and ecological dimensions, causes and consequences of current crises relating to food security, raw material conflicts or the dynamics of the energy and mobility transition and to develop solutions, we need the perspectives of different scientific disciplines," explains Prof. Dr. Sybille Bauriedl, Director of CREST. “The specialty of our research center is that processes, problems and solutions are considered and thus a strong practical relevance and transfer of research results into society and politics is pursued.”
The research center will strengthen the third profile area of the European University. The main focus here is on the transition to a sustainable future.
- How can the various challenges of the present be addressed?
- What socio-technical and social innovations are needed for a sustainability transformation?
- Where and how can sustainability potential be activated?
Research focuses on topics such as lifestyles and basic needs, knowledge and emotions, energy and material flows, post-growth and hierarchizations in the relationship between humans and nature.
Equity, globalization, international and regional science transfer
Whether sufficiency research, the consideration of urban change, post-growth research or research on sustainable nutrition and consumer education - the topics of “justice” and globalization are cross-cutting themes across all disciplines. "We develop both concrete implementation projects and scientific contributions to issues affecting society as a whole. To this end, we cooperate with local and regional partners in the field and are also very well networked internationally in transformation and sustainability research," explains Director Bauriedl.
Strengthening sustainability and transformation research
Knowledge transfer and research on the topics of transformation and sustainability go hand in hand at CREST. “The research center supports the acquisition of third-party funded projects by EUF members and their partners and strengthens young scientists at the EUF,” says Bauriedl. The fact that the center's topics are highly topical is also demonstrated by the establishment of the state research focus “Transformation”, which CREST is helping to set up together with the other two EUF research centers.
