More Scholarships, More Opportunities for Students in Flensburg
A Deutschlandstipendium (Germany scholarship) gives students the freedom to focus on their studies. Recipients receive a monthly payment of 300 euros. Half of this is funded by the federal government, and the other half by private sponsors.
Last year, Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse supported EUF students for the first time. By 2030, a total of 138 scholarships will be funded by Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse. The funding comes from the Nospa Nord-Ostsee Stiftung, and the endowment of Christa and Wolfgang Hübner, which is specifically aimed at supporting the development of disadvantaged young people. Frauke Hegemann, Nospa’s chairperson: “Investing in people is investing in the future—that’s why we’re participating in the Deutschlandstipendium program. By supporting young talent on their journey, we’re not only promoting academic progress; we’re also strengthening our society as a whole.”
“For me, the Deutschlandstipendium is far more than just financial support. It conveys esteem and the feeling that my own path is being recognized. For a long time, I thought that only top grades mattered for such scholarships. That’s why I was all the more impressed that social engagement and personal challenges are also considered. This makes the Deutschlandstipendium particularly relevant to my life and shows that people are viewed as whole individuals here. After spinal surgery and the chronic pain that came with it, I often worried that I wouldn’t be able to meet the demands of my studies. During this time, the scholarship not only provided me with financial relief; it also gave me the feeling that my efforts were recognized and valued. This recognition means a great deal to me and has further encouraged me on my academic journey,” explains Melissa Lorenzen. She is one of the first five scholarship holders to have been supported by Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse since the last fall semester.
More scholarships, more diversity
“We are very pleased about the support from Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse for our students,” explains Anke Wischmann, Vice President for Teaching and Learning. “Starting next year, 87 Deutschlandstipendien can be awarded at EUF. Over the past three years, we’ve been able to more than double the number of scholarships that can be awarded.” In addition to good grades, other factors are also important for the Deutschlandstipendium. The Deutschlandstipendium provides a financial breathing space to students who, for example, volunteer, care for family members, or face additional challenges in their studies due to other burdens.
Two cohorts, three years of support
This is precisely where the scholarships sponsored by Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse come in. Support is provided primarily to disadvantaged bachelor's students at the beginning of their studies who are under 27 years of age before the funding begins. A cohort of 20 scholarship students will start in the fall semester of 2026/27, and another cohort will begin next year. Scholarship holders receive financial support over three years, which accompanies them for a significant portion of their studies.
