Press releases of Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF)

1,600 new faces on campus—this is what the start of the academic year looks like at EUF

Despite the transition from the G8 to the G9 system, the number of first-year students at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) remains constant

The fall semester at EUF traditionally begins with an orientation week in early September. EUF President Prof. Dr. Christiane Hipp welcomed approximately 1,600 students to Flensburg. The number of first-year students is similar to that from last year, and the number of new students from Schleswig-Holstein remains as high as in previous years despite the small number of school leavers following the transition from the G8 to G9 system. At the same time, the proportion of new international students has grown.

Student numbers remain unchanged despite fewer school leavers

With around 1,600 new students, a total of approximately 5,400 students are currently enrolled at Europa-Universität Flensburg. "We are very pleased with the continued high level of interest in our degree programs. We have traditionally been a university with many students from Schleswig-Holstein. Given this year's significantly smaller number of school leavers in Schleswig-Holstein due to the transition from G8 to G9, we are delighted by this sustained interest. This shows us that our degree programs resonate with prospective students, and we are delighted about that”, explains Prof. Dr. Christiane Hipp, President of EUF.

Proportion of international students on the rise

This year, the proportion of international students at EUF has increased further. About 10% of the first-year students come from abroad. Last year, that figure was around 9%. Christiane Hipp: “Our degree programs are also well-received internationally, and we are very pleased with the growth in the number of international students.” Overall, about 10% of all EUF students come from abroad.

Figures and background

Approximately 1,600 new students have enrolled at EUF for the fall semester 2026/27 (as of September 21, 2026). This brings the current total number of students at EUF to around 5,400.

Approximately 73% of EUF students are enrolled in educational science degree programs, either in the B.A. in Educational Sciences or in the Master of Education degree programs, which allow for specialization in various types of schools. About 16% of students are enrolled in international or European studies degree programs, while about 6% are enrolled in the university’s engineering or social science degree programs with a focus area on sustainability and transformation, and about 5% are doctoral researchers and exchange students.

These are preliminary figures from September 21, 2026 as the enrollment period has not yet ended.
