Senate Chair Re-elected by New Senate
At the inaugural meeting of the newly elected Senate at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Prof. Dr. Berthold Hass was unanimously elected as the new Chair. He now begins his second term as Senate Chair. Prof. Dr. Monika Eigmüller was also unanimously re-elected as Vice Chair of the Senate.
"I look forward to working with the newly elected Senate. The fact that Prof. Dr. Berthold Hass and Prof. Dr. Monika Eigmüller were unanimously re-elected demonstrates the high regard for their work in the previous term," stated Prof. Dr. Christiane Hipp, EUF president.
The Senate as a body where all stakeholder groups can contribute their perspectives
Berthold Hass is Professor of Business Administration at EUF. He specializes in media management and marketing. Berthold Hass studied business administration and economics at HU Berlin and HEC Lausanne and received his doctorate from LMU Munich in 2002 for his work on the management of new media companies. After holding a junior professorship at the University of Koblenz, he was appointed to EUF in 2009.
His areas of expertise include media and communication management, new and social media, advertising and marketing, and corporate communications.
Berthold Hass has been a member of the Senate since 2016 and previously served as Senate Chair during the 2024–2026 term.
"I am grateful for the Senate's trust in me and hope to live up to it over the next two years," said Hass. "In the term that is now beginning, key decisions will be made regarding the further development of EUF. The Senate serves as the central forum where all status groups can contribute their perspectives."
Shaping the future together
Monika Eigmüller, who was elected Vice Chair of the Senate, is Professor of Sociology and Executive Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for European Studies (ICES) at EUF. Monika Eigmüller studied political science, sociology, and economics at the University of Leipzig and obtained her doctorate in 2006 for her work on European border security policy. From 2008–2015, she led a Volkswagen Foundation junior research group at Freie Universität Berlin. In 2015, she was appointed Professor of Sociology and European Studies at EUF. Her research focus is on, among other things, values and value change in European societies, European borders and migration, and discrimination. Monika Eigmüller served as Vice President for European and International Affairs from 2015–2021 and has been a member of the Senate since 2022.
"For me, the Senate is a central forum where we can reflect together on the future of our university and actively shape it. In doing so, it is particularly important to me to bring together different perspectives and jointly develop viable ideas for the further development of EUF. I am very much looking forward to continuing this work as Vice Chair of the Senate and to strengthening vibrant academic self-governance at EUF," explains Prof. Dr. Monika Eigmüller.
Europa-Universität Flensburg’s Senate
As the central self-governing body, the Senate advises the university and makes decisions on matters of research, teaching, and learning that affect the entire university or are of fundamental importance. This includes, for example, taking decisions on the university's structure and development plan and electing the president.
The Senate consists of 25 representatives from the following groups of members of the university: professors (13 members), non-professorial teaching staff (four members), technical and administrative staff (four members), and students (four members), as well as their deputies.
