International conference on planetary boundaries and sustainable transformation.

Under the title Living within Planetary Boundaries – Facing Facts | Rethinking Strategies | Building Bridges, the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) will host an international conference on 6 October 2026 in Berlin and online. The conference focuses on scientific insights into planetary boundaries and explores political and societal strategies for sustainable transformation. The programme combines keynote lectures, panel discussions, and parallel sessions addressing topics such as sufficiency, the circular economy, sustainable economic systems, and communication for societal change.

Matthias Schmelzer will contribute an impulse talk in the session Economics: Economics of a Livable Planet. Keynote speakers include Johan Rockström (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), who will open the conference with Keeping Earth Resilient within Planetary Boundaries, as well as Dirk Messner (German Environment Agency) and Wolfgang Lucht (German Advisory Council on the Environment). Parallel sessions feature contributions from Line Gordon (Stockholm Resilience Centre), Maarten Hajer (Utrecht University), Janez Potočnik (International Resource Panel), Claudia Kemfert (German Advisory Council on the Environment), Richard Damania (World Bank), and Eva-Maria McCormack (Talking Hope), who will discuss current perspectives on sustainability and societal transformation.
