The Concrete Age: The rise of the most widely used man-made material

Sub-project of the BMBF-funded research project at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena "Mentalities in flux. Imaginary worlds in modern bio-cycle-based societies (flumen)"
The project analyzes the socio-ecological transformation from fossil to bio-based, post-fossil societies with a focus on the relationships between the changing energy and resource base and social mentalities, practices and perceptions. The historical module conceptualizes "fossil mentalities" as a central obstacle to any sustainability transformation. The focus is on an empirical study that analyzes the rise of concrete and cement, combining material flow accounting, commodity frontiers and environmental, economic and mental history, as well as outlining challenges for a socio-ecological transformation based on sufficiency.
