ViNoRHM Final Workshop
‘Visualising historical multilingualism in regional everyday languages: language ideology, language policy and language practices’
13–14 January 2026 • 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
University of Flensburg • Room Tallinn 007
We cordially invite you to the final workshop of our DFG project! Over two days, we will take a look at how historical multilingualism in regional everyday languages can be researched and made visible – and present current research results from the project's sub-areas of language ideology, language policy and language practices.
The ViNoRHM project combines micro-level case studies on language ideology, -policy and -practices using primary texts from official records and previously little-studied archival materials, bringing previously invisible or invisible languages and individuals (especially women and the un/less educated) to the fore in an innovative presentation of the linguistic history of the German-Danish border region in the 19th century.
The event is aimed at researchers working on historical multilingualism, linguistics, regional and border studies, as well as the campus community, students and anyone interested in gaining exciting insights into ongoing research.
You can expect:
Insights into the key research findings of our DFG project from project leader Dr Samantha M. Litty (Institute for Frisian Studies and Minority Research) and former student assistant Andre Hermann (EUF)
Guest lectures by experts from various European countries Andreas Krogull (Zurich)
- Markus Schiegg (Fribourg)
- Doris Stolberg (IDS Mannheim)
- Gijsbert Rutten (Leiden) & Rik Vosters (Brussels)
A lively discussion round with local and international researchers
Space for networking, questions, further reflection.
The workshop will be held in German and/or English, depending on the preference of the speakers.
There are no conference fees, but we ask all participants (speakers and audience) to register by 31 December so that we can provide enough coffee and cake!
Come along, join the discussion and celebrate the conclusion of this exciting project with us!
