Studying Philosophy at EUF

You can study Philosophy at Europa-Universität Flensburg as a subject within the B.A. Educational Sciences and the M.Ed. Teacher Education programme (for primary schools and comprehensive schools).

The B.A. programme provides a pathway to the Master of Education degree, but also opens up opportunities to pursue non-teaching-related master’s programmes in Flensburg or at other universities.

In every cohort so far, there have been students who specifically aim for a career as a teacher, as well as students with clear interests and goals outside the school system. Naturally, there are also students who are not yet sure what they want to become in the future, but who are interested in philosophy.

Due to the small size of the institute, our students benefit from close personal contact with both lecturers and fellow philosophy students. We place great emphasis on intensive support and guidance for students. Especially during the first semesters, larger courses are accompanied by tutorials in which discussions and writing exercises take place in small groups (maximum 10 students).

Please note: The degree programmes in which Philosophy can be studied as a subject are taught in German. Students therefore need sufficient proficiency in German to study Philosophy at Europa-Universität Flensburg.

In addition to the polyvalent Bachelor’s programme in Philosophy and the Master of Education programmes for teacher training, the Department of Philosophy also contributes to other degree programmes. The complete range of programmes offered by the Department is as follows:

• B.A. Philosophy within the Educational Sciences degree programme
• M.A. Philosophy for Primary School Teacher Education
• M.A. Philosophy for Teacher Education at Comprehensive Schools
• M.A. Philosophy for Teacher Education at Lower Secondary Level (Sekundarstufe I)

• Module "Education in the Context of Societal Transformation" (new: Philosophy and Sociology of Education) within the sub-degree programme "Pedagogy and Education" of the B.A. Educational Sciences
• Three modules on the Philosophy of Europe in the M.A. European Studies (taught in English)
• Three modules in the B.A. European Cultures and Societies (taught in English)
• Module "Philosophy of Education" in the M.A. Education in Europe
• Two partial modules in the M.A. Transformation Studies
