Navigating Matters: Reflections on an Oxford-Made Ivory Nocturnal in Munich Celine Camps cc4304@columbia.edu This paper focuses on an Oxford-made, purportedly eighteenth-century, ivory noc- turnal from the Deutsches Museum. While nocturnals are kept in various other mu- seum collections, those instances are invariably made of metal or wood. The use of ivory is especially noteworthy due to the nocturnal’s provenance: Oxford was nei- ther a center for ivory products nor for scientific-instrument-making.
