Short description

Marcel Smolka has been Full Professor for International Economics at Europa-Universität Flensburg since September 2019. Before joining Flensburg, he was an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at Aarhus University (Denmark) since May 2014. Since 2018 he has also been a member of the CESifo Research Network in Munich.

After studying business administration and international economics in Essen, Tübingen and Madrid, he continued his studies at the graduate level in international economics (2009-2014) under the supervision of Professor Wilhelm Kohler. During his work on his dissertation, he spent two terms at University College London (2013-2014). He was awarded a PhD in international economics from the University of Tübingen in April 2014 ("summa cum laude").

Marcel Smolka's research interests lie within international economics, and especially international trade, multinational firms, and migration. His research has been published in leading academic journals in economics including the Economic Journal, the Journal of International Economics, and the European Economic Review. It was awarded prizes from the Royal Economic Society (RES), the Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP) and the Ruhr Graduate School of Economics (RGS Econ), among others.
