20/06/2019 - EUCS students visit Kulturhof Flensburg

On Tuesday the 11th of June, Nele Feuring, Stella Terjung and Abdulrahman Al-Hadid, tutors of the module "Culture and Education" in the B.A. European Cultures and Society program at the Europa-Universität Flensburg organised an excursion to Kulturhof Flensburg e.V. Nele, Stella and Abdulrahman who are students in the 6th semester of this Bachelor offered this organised visit to their younger cohort in the 2nd semester of the same program.

Kulturhof Flensburg e.V is a local non profit project Café made up of 12 volunteers with different professional backgrounds. The Café is an important place for social and cultural exchange and dialogue within the City. Kate, one of the Café’s volunteers, provided an introduction to the initial idea behind the Café and mentioned the challenges and offers of her work to the students. Nele's, Stella’s and Abdulrahman's aim for this visit was to contextualize the theoretical input of this module, with a practical example so that the students would have a better understanding of Culture and Education in practice. The visit also allowed the students to have a final get together before the semester ends by having some tasty treats and snacks. The staff of Kulturhof Flensburg e.V stated that they are always happy to take on more volunteers if anybody is interested in getting engaged with the project.

05/06/2019 - Eucs Student Arises In Slovenia

Louis Taubert a 6th semester student in our program had the opportunity to participate in the European Academy On Youth Work, which took place on the 21st- 24th of May in Slovenia. The European Academy on Youth Work is an organisation that was formed by the National Agencies for Erasmus+, youth field, of Austria, Belgium (FL), Finland, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Slovenia, SALTO-YOUTH Resource Centres and the Youth Partnership between the European Union and the Council of Europe. Louis and 139 participants from the Eu countries mentioned above were invited to discuss the current trends, Innovation and policy-making procedures that go on within youth work. Louis was also part of a small NGO called The Pigeon Plan, which was selected to be one of 36 contributors from a variety of countries and backgrounds. Louis’s contribution involved the opportunity to choose 6 workshops, which displayed and provided a selection of tools, methods and practices from numerous fields.

By gaining some expertise from these workshops, Louis and the rest of the members of the Pigeon Plan provided a seminar, which was aimed at creating cross border co-operation through the means of skateboarding. 16 Participants from all over the world attended this seminar, which began with a member of the team describing the story of the association from where it all began to now and concluded with the creation of a collective work of art that was formed using skateboards.

Overall, the feedback given from the participants in the seminar was very positive and the experience gained from this has provided Louis and the rest of the members of the Pigeon Plan an opportunity to create links with many other projects.  They were also very excited with the opportunity to develop a network of future partners that have the concern of sharing knowledge, innovative practices and working with refugees, disadvantaged youth and young adults across Europe.

14/05/2019 - Europe Week 2019

Last Tuesday the 7th of May marked the beginning of Europe week at EUF. There were numerous events organized in order to celebrate the values of the European Union. Among these events, some were organized by the students of the B.A. EUCS and by the International Office of the university.

The program’s participation began with undergraduates and members of the Student Union: Stella, Katia and Cayen creating a stand in the foyer of the Helsinki building to discuss the importance of the upcoming European Elections. They created a poster where fellow students and staff could write which European values were important to them and why. They wanted to display the reasoning behind people’s decision to vote in the upcoming election. The main aim of this stand was to raise awareness and get more students and members of faculty to vote in the European Elections.

Across the hall the international Office instilled a board where students could write something in their native languages. Over the week there was also short language taster classes so that students could learn a few words in languages such as Danish, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and many other languages. Students were also given a brief introduction to the culture of the language that they chose.

On Thursday and Friday Patrícia and her Student Hiwi Daniel attended a careers fair in the Flens Arena where they got to meet prospective students of the program. During the careers fair Patrícia and Daniel explained to students what European Cultures and Society is all about and the fantastic opportunities it provides. Over the course of the two days Patrícia and Daniel ended up talking to roughly 25 students.

Overall, the week was very successful as future students got to learn about our program and current students got to understand what is great about being a part of a European Culture and Society.

All the other events that took place during the Europe Week at EUF can be found here:

08/03/2019 - International Students touchdown in Flensburg

This week marked the arrival of the international students to the EUF (Europa-Universität Flensburg) for the upcoming spring semester. This year there was a diverse group of students as they have arrived from all 4 corners of the planet from Argentina to Austria and Palestine to Portugal.

It all began on Sunday the 3rd of March as the new international students got to meet each other for the first time through the form of a Breakfast buffet, which was held in Café Extrablatt and organised by LEI (Local Erasmus Initiative). Everyone enjoyed the breakfast as the café had a wide variety of food to choose from so that it could cater to everyone.

I am also an exchange student from Ireland but have been working in the EUCS department for the last 9 weeks. So it was really nice to meet the exchange students and learn about their different cultures. After our lovely breakfast, the student assistants Akbar and Kerri gave us a guided tour of Flensburg where we got to see sights such as the Nordertor and the harbour. While we were at the harbour we saw many people queuing up for a fish sandwich. Our guides told us that this fish sandwich is very popular among the locals as it’s the last fish place before the border to Denmark. The tour ended with a visit to Südermarkt where our guides showed us the many shops and restaurants in Flensburg.

On Tuesday the 5thof March the International Office of the university organised another breakfast for the International Students, which was held in the Helsinki building. The students got to try the local cuisine of Flensburg such as their smoked fish, Breads, Spreads etc. I have to say the breakfast went down a treat among the international students. After breakfast the international Office gave us a presentation of the upcoming activities that will be taking place during our time here in Flensburg.

The next day the students got off to an early rise, as they had to register for their classes for the upcoming semester. Lucila the Co-ordinator for the international Office was delighted because it only took 4 hours to register all the students for their classes, which is apparently the fastest time ever to register all the students. The very same day we also had our first class of the semester in German Academic Culture where we got to meet our lecturer Scott Simpson. Scott told us that he is an American citizen who has travelled the world. Scott then began to share some of his experiences with us, which we found fascinating. Overall this week has been a lovely experience and hopefully there is many more to come.

26/02/2019 - Rosi's final reflection as EUCS welcomes their new secretary

After 23 years here at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) our secretary in the European Cultures and Society (EUCS) department Rosi Gerlich will be moving on, come the beginning of March, in order to open a new chapter in her life. Before she leaves we in the department caught up with Rosi in order to reflect on her time here at EUF. We also met up with our incoming secretary Cécile Votteler where we discuss her previous experiences and how she is looking forward to her new role here at EUF.

After 23 years here at EUF, are you looking forward to opening a new chapter in your life?

Yes I am definitely looking forward to this new chapter in my life as I now have more time to see my grandchildren and travel the world.

During your time here at EUF, what were your most rewarding moments?

I find that when the students pass their exams or when my younger colleagues successfully complete their dissertations the most satisfying.

What were your most challenging moments as secretary during your time here at EUF?

It was probably when the computer crashed because of power outage and this made it very difficult to do my job.

We in the department have heard that you have been on many Erasmus experiences, could you tell us more about them?

Yes, I have been on 3 Erasmus exchange programs to Çukurova University Adana/Turkey, Pädagogische Hochschule Vienna/Austria and Free University Bozen/South Tyrol. They were all very nice locations but my favourite destination was Adana because of the hospitality that I received.

If there were any advice you would give to our new secretary Cécile, what would it be?

My one piece of advice that I would give to Cécile is that when she is busy here, it is very important to remain calm when dealing with the students and their queries.

Is there any last message you would like to give to the EUCS students?

Ah the students of EUCS. My final message to the students of EUCS is to please register properly for your exams, as it is very important!!

How are you finding your first few weeks here in EUF?

I’ve found my first few weeks here to be really enjoyable. There is a lot of information to take on board but all in all I have really enjoyed it.

Is this your first time working in a higher-level Education institution?

Yes, this is my first time working in a university.

As you know we have also had many international students here at EUF. I would like to ask have you also had any experience of living abroad? If so could you tell us more about your experience?

Yes, I have lived in France for several years on the Cote d’Azur. From my own experience I can say that the two countries are quite contrasting. For example the climate, the mentality and the way of life are very different.

What type of issues will you be dealing with within EUCS?

I will be mostly providing information and advice for the students and also planning the semester and exam timetables.

What areas of the Job will you find challenging in the beginning?

All of them!

What areas of the Job will you find rewarding?

I think I will find being in contact with the students and helping to solve their queries the most fulfilling.

Would you like to leave a message for the students of EUCS?

For my final message I would basically just say everything that Rosi said in that it is very important to properly register for your exams so please do that.

n Wednesday the 13th of February four representatives from Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) got off to an early start and made the journey to Husum where they attended a careers fair in the Berufliche Schule des kreises Nordfriesland. Many students attended this fair due to the presence of many higher-level institutions and businesses. The fair was mainly aimed at students in their final year of high school.

The day began with the representatives speaking to prospective students about the bachelor programs available at EUF and what options the students could pursue once they had completed these programs. Patrícia, the European Cultures and Society (EUCS) program coordinator, was talking to students about the EUCS program. While Claudia one of the EUF Guidance Councillors was talking to students about International Management and Teacher Training programs. 04/12/2018 - Exhibition “Comradeship – Drifting on those lost at sea” now open!

Exhibition "Comradeship – Drifting on those lost at sea" now open!

Students of the "European University Flensburg", who are currently studying "European Cultures and Society", invite you to be part of a story about solidarity and comradeship. The opening ceremony of the exhibition took place last Sunday, 8th April, 2018 and can be visited until Saturday, 14th April. The simple tomb of a sailor served as inspiration for the exhibition, which revolves around the cholera infected sailor of the West-Indies, "Peter Thomson", and his fellow crew members on the ship. Thomson died in 1850, after he had been denied entrance to the harbour of Flensburg, his hometown, due to the risk of infection. He was buried by his comrades at the Northern shore of Holnis. A collection of driftwood pieces, which symbolise Thomson and his crew, should allow the viewer of the exhibition to make personal associations and encourage their imagination.

"Comradeship – Drifting on those lost at sea" was created under the banner of an instruction-based project of the tutorial "Art and Scenography", a course of the study program "European Cultures and Society". Where? Modul 1, Rote Straße 17, 24937 Flensburg, When? 8th April – 13th April, 4-8 pm, 14th April, 12 am – 6 pm

21/09/2017 - Welcome to the new Students HeSe 2017/18

21/04/2017 Debate with Sven Giegold (MEP)

Quo Vadis Europe? - The future of Europe

Europa-Universität Flensburg had the pleasure of welcoming Sven Giegold, member of the German political party Alliance90 / The Greens and Member of the European Parliament. He gladly accepted to meet up with a small group of students of the B.A. European Cultures and Society to discuss the topic "Quo vadis Europe?" - the future of Europe. Interested members of the faculty and staff were also glad to be able to join the debate.

Sven Giegold did not inhibit himself when talking about several topics of interest to the European public connected to the past, present and future of the European Union. He started by congratulating the University of Flensburg for the transformation into Europa-Universität, title which only a few universities possess but which represents a project in which the EU can be felt, especially considering its key insertion in the border region of Germany and Denmark.

He went on to discuss the very hot topic of populist parties and how they have been winning votes from citizens disappointed with EU policies and with the globalization process. Globalization seems to have resulted in a very sharp and serious gap between winners and losers. He mentioned not only an economic gap but also a gap of recognition in which regions of the EU that were not attractive to global capital lost all importance.

In response to the devastating effects of globalization, the populists are offering solutions that go through the reinvention of the nation-state and in its extreme form the extinction of the EU project. The position of Sven Giegold was very clear – nation-states alone can no longer control the future and fight against the consequences of globalization. Quite the contrary, the moment demands for cooperation.

Rather than focusing on technocratic solutions to some of the issues that the E.U. is facing, he suggests talking to the European citizens about identity and developing feelings towards the idea of a strong EU. He talked about the 1 million babies that came out of relationships developed through Erasmus experiences or about the fact that the EU is seen as a signal of hope in the east.

The solution he proposes is a "new Green-deal" for Europe. One that revolves around common European projects, energy supply issues, the increase of generalized Erasmus-type of experiences, the development of the rail connections between countries, etc. Why aim so low and plan for such a distant future when there are urgent matters that need more immediate solutions? – he was asked by the audience. The answer lies on the fact that these solutions are actually susceptible of finding consensus and actually be implemented.

After a short talk, Rasmus Andresen opened and mediated the debate. There were questions about several complicated and controversial topics: from the financial crisis, through tax and banking policies and the way the EU has been managing the refugee crisis, among others. Facing a varied array of questions, the member of the European Parliament did not hide his positions or refused to cause an impact with his views. He was always quite open and honest in his responses, also admitting the limitations of current solutions to the challenges that the EU is facing.

The debate itself was lively, critical and diverse. Students of the B.A. European Cultures and Society eager to participate in the debate at the highest level; the willingness to conduct the debate in several languages to accommodate the audience’s comfort zone; and the visible wide range of nationalities sitting in the audience… This was truly a European event in a European university.

All the attention was turned to the first recipient of this prize - Prof. Dr. Hauke Brunkhorst - for his outstanding scientific research in European topics.

07/10/2016 - EUCS student defining "Peace" in Schleswig-Holstein

What is the definition of Peace?

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, the German state Schleswig-Holstein decided to call upon its friends to shoot some videos showing a place that they liked or explaining a concept connected to this state. The aim was to form a lexicon and have it in the main website of Schleswig-Holstein.

Under "F" for "Frieden", or in English "Peace", we can find Qais Hatefi, a new student of the B.A. European Cultures and Society, presenting us with his own definition.

Cheers to Qais for his help and to Schleswig-Holstein for its anniversary.

Take a look at the entire lexicon here.

And at the video about "peace" here.

The B.A. EUCS was also offered the chance to participate in the Bachelor Information Day aimed at showing the several study programs that both the Europa Universität Flensburg and the Hochschule Flensburg have in cooperation with the University of Southern Denmark. In this event, Prof. Dr. Reichold, Head of Studies of this B.A., thoroughly explained the concept of the study-program to a room full of interested students. (03.05.2016)

The week after, EUCS was present at the Europa-Universität stand in the Nordjob Fair that took place in Flensarena, in Flensburg. We were pleasantly surprised to see so many people interested on the B.A. European Cultures and Society, asking concrete questions about the program and how to apply. (10-11.05.2016)

03/05/2016 - EUCS @ the Job Center in Flensburg

This Saturday the B.A. European Cultures and Society presented itself for the first time in a University fair, with successful results.

The fair started at 10:00 and finished at 15:00. During this period of time the B.A. EUCS was presented alongside the other bachelor programs being offered by Europa-Universität Flensburg. We were happy to provide information about our study program to the many visitors who showed interest in receiving more information.

The visitors were mainly interested in obtaining more information about the program, how to apply, what are the job possibilities, what activities can be done in Flensburg in parallel to studying...

We hope to have satisfied the curiosity of all our visitors and to welcome many of those visitors to our B.A. in October.

For those who could not be present at this job fair, you can join us on 03.05.2016 at the Bachelor Information Day, on 10-11.05.2016 in Nordjob or later this month in Hamburg. Otherwise feel free to send us an email if you have any questions you would like to ask us.

08/04/2016 - Exclusive image of the B.A. EUCS

The B.A. EUCS has its own exclusive image.

In the first day of April the B.A. European Cultures and Society found its representing image in this cartoon drawn by the artist Käthe Wenzel to be used exclusively by this study program.

This image was conceptualized having in mind some of the Topics and Disciplines of the EUCS program and as well its essential and practical dimension "Doing Europe". As the first image connected to the bachelor that will start this upcoming Winter Semester 2016/17, it shows how promising this study program is in terms of allowing for the development of new ideas that go beyond the mere learning of university subjects.

With this image we look forward to welcoming all the new students that will join us in October and to launch the first stepping stone to an excellent study program.
