From 1997 to 1998 she lived in Madrid where she worked for the German Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and later for the Spanish PSOE. After completion of her studies, she worked for the UN Refugee Relief Organization UNHCR at first and finally returned to the University of Leipzig where she took her doctoral degree with a dissertation about the European border control policy in the year 2006.
