Präsentation im Rahmen des ICES Research Colloquium Ongoing globalization and transnationalization processes have profoundly affected many societies over the last decades. Within sociology, this has, inter alia, raised the question of to what extent we can observe the formation of transnational social classes as a result of these processes. Research Council (ERC) fund social scientific research and make it visible as genuinely European – if only on a selective and temporary basis. Drawing on an analysis of ERC Starting Grants from 2007-2012, the presentation shows how ERC-funded projects deal with a competition for excellence that aims at establishing a ‚Mode-2‘ science that renders country- and discipline-specific social scientific knowledge precarious [...] beyond this self-proclaimed ‚Champions League of Research‘, however, a broader discussion is necessary: Historically, the expansion of (national) programs fostering e.g. social security and education

Dr. Simone Varriale will give a presentation at the ICES Lecture about "The coloniality of distinction: class, race and whiteness among post-crisis Italian migrants" This lecture explores how migrants’ strategies of class distinction reproduce racialised hierarchies between ‘modern’ and ‘backward’ European populations. Drawing on 57 interviews with Italian migrants who moved to England after the 2008 economic crisis, and combining Bourdieusian class analysis and decolonial critique, the lecture shows that migrants in different social positions are equally concerned with claiming closeness
