Zero Tolerance for Intolerance!

A joint statement of the higher education institutions of the State of Schleswig-Holstein

People from countries all over the world study, work, and engage in research at our universities. Together, we shape the academic hub of Schleswig-Holstein and rely on networking with each other, and with other universities worldwide. Diversity is a valuable asset that we want to preserve, and openness is a value that we stand for.

The higher education institutions of the State of Schleswig-Holstein condemn the plans of right-wing extremist forces to disenfranchise and deport millions of people. These intentions are an attack on our democracy, our fundamental values, and human dignity. They call into question our free society and are an immediate threat to our peaceful and diverse coexistence. Zero tolerance for intolerance!

As numerous recent demonstrations have shown, increasing numbers of people in our country do not share the racist ideology of right-wing extremist movements. These demonstrations are a show against hate and incitement, exclusion and discrimination, fascism, and right-wing extremism. It is high time for the democratic forces of the country to raise their voices and make themselves heard, to protect our democracy and free society against those who seek to restrict or destroy it. As democratic places of knowledge, we also publicly declare our solidarity:

The higher education institutions of the State of Schleswig-Holstein stand side by side with all those who advocate for humanity, respect, and a coexistence based in solidarity. A state higher learning institutions, we welcome people – regardless of skin color, religious belief, gender, sexual orientation, and origin. At this point, we also refer to the statement of the German Rectors' Conference [Hochschulrektorenkonferenz], which we expressly support.

Let us show attitude for a solidarity-based society, diversity of opinion, pluralism, and diversity, and let us defend our democracy together!
