Die Bestimmung dessen, was als Ethnographie bezeichnet wird, ist nicht leicht und in disziplinären, wie nationalen Kontexten höchst unterschiedlich. Gleichzeitig vermag Ethnographie eine interdisziplinäre und internationale Perspektive einzunehmen.  Ethnographie ist nicht einfach nur Datenerhebungsmethode, sondern auch Forschungshaltung, -strategie und Auswertungsmethode.

Ausgehend von teilnehmenden Beobachtungen und ethnographischen Interviews vollzieht sich im Zuge der Ethnographie ein going native, welches als Kenntnis in den wissenschaftlichen Diskurs eingebracht werden kann. Ethnographie folgt dabei qualitativen Paradigmen, stellt jedoch auch ein eigenes Paradigma dar. Für Ethnographien sind Praktiken, Sprache, Materialien, Artefakte, Räume, Orte und Zeiten bedeutsam. Es ist ein umfassendes Konzept zur Erforschung sozialer Phänomene und Sachverhalte, das sich zuweilen an der Grenze zur Anthropologie bewegt.

Der Workshop  gibt eine Einführung in die Ethnographie und ermöglicht mit einem erfahrenen Anthropologen über Perspektiven ethnographischer Forschung ins Gespräch zu kommen.

Introduction to Ethnography

Discovering what we call ethnography is a complex process which additionally can be described as varying within national and disciplinary contexts.  Simultaneously ethnography evidently  represents an interdisciplinary and international perspective.

Ethnography is not only a tool for data gathering, but it can also be methodology, epistemology,  research strategy and a tool for analysis.

Starting with participant observation and ethnographic interviews, the ethnographer attempts to explore and understand the very views of her interlocutors. And it is this awareness and knowledge that will be brought back into the scientific discourse.

Ethnography follows a qualitative paradigm, but also builds a paradigm of its own. It has implications and is largely employed in all fields of the social sciences. Ethnography focusses on practices, performances, discourse, interactions, exchanges, materials, artefacts, place, space and time. It is a comprising concept to do research on social phenomena and questions, that at times can be situated at the limits of Anthropology.

The workshop introduces ethnography and enables the questioning and discussion with an experienced anthropologist.
