Freedom of movement for severely disabled people in Europe:  How citizens’ rights challenge the European social model.
People with physical and/or mental impairments often depend on personal assistance services or social welfare services to cope with their everyday life. This dependency may disable them to exercise their fundamental right as European citizens to move and reside freely within the European Union, causing an area of tension between anti-discrimination law and the national welfare systems. The first part of this doctoral thesis examines disabled people’s possibilities for (self-) advocacy in Brussels, how the European perspective on disability changes, and how this tension challenges the European social model.
