Marita McGrory: The internationalisation of Higher Education: Comparing the international and German students’ success rates in Germany’s HEIs over twenty years

German Higher Education’s good reputation is used to attract international students (Heublein, 2011). As a group, international students provide the German university with internationalisation at home, and as graduates, they are an important source of labour for the local, regional and international workforce (McGrory, 2020). Graduated international alumni are considered an important medium for institutions that aim at maintaining or increasing their number of international students (Mazzarol Soutar 2002). Unfortunately, international students are reported to have higher dropout rates than their German colleagues in bachelor programmes (DAAD, 2018). However, more recent research has shown that international students in host countries such as the US have comparably better success rates than their native colleagues (Kercher 2018). This work presents the comparative success rates of international and German students in some of Germany’s popular fields of study. The cross-cohort analysis using official statistics and covering two decades of diplom and bachelor programmes in Germany’s HEIs also show the better success rates of international students over their native colleagues in mechanical engineering.
