Workshop Christoper Thornhill

Online Workshop with Christopher Thornhill July 11th, 2020, 15:00-19:15

In recent years, many democracies have begun to show signs of intense instability. In many cases, governments have been established that manifestly undermine core aspects of constitutional democracy. This is visible in polities that assumed democratic form in the democratic transitions of the 1980s and 1990s, such as Brazil, Poland and Hungary. But it is also visible in polities with longer democratic histories, for example the USA, the UK and India. Discussion of contemporary democracy is necessarily a discussion of democratic crisis, its causes, and its potential remedies.

This online Colloquium, organized under the auspices of the Europa-Universität Flensburg, addresses these themes. It approaches these themes by examining forthcoming works, soon to be published, by Hauke Brunkhorst, Kolja Möller and Chris Thornhill, which engage in different ways with the legitimational problems that affect democratic polities in contemporary society.

The Colloquium will be divided into three sessions, each focused on extracts from recent work by the above authors. Texts will be provided.

All participants are welcome! If you would like to participate, please send an email to to register! The Workshop will be held online via WebEx.
