Details

In the last few years, Naples has seen a mushrooming of urban social movements and occupations. Most of today's active spaces have started operating in the last five years. Unlike older centri sociali, the more recent "liberated spaces" are typically located in large, monumental buildings in the city centre, and seek to move away from the political sectarianism of their predecessors. Particularly striking - and problematic - is the intensive and continuative cooperation between the activists and the city government. This presentation offers a glimpse into the daily life and the strategic choices of these spaces, in relation to both other spaces and to the city government. The research offers a multi-scalar, variegated reconstruction of the factors that have played into this process. It concludes with a critical assessment of the relevance of these spaces for activists, for citizens at large, and, more generally, for urban democracy.
