Background and Tasks
In view of the diverse and fundamental changes to working and life processes, continuing education in our knowledge-based society is becoming more and more important. Social issues and problems require social construction and reflection. Different situations require new initiatives and measures that continuing education can provide. Everyone should feel they can always update their knowledge in order to keep pace with the changes in their work and daily lives.
Acquiring new knowledge is seen as a basic prerequisite in order to face ever-changing developments of skills and qualifications. It is said that science has a potential for innovation and serves to challenge the traditional perception of problems. It offers people new perspectives that enable change and at the same time the chances for development and education as well as to raise new issues. Against this background it is now recognized that, as well as research and teaching, scientific continuing education is the third main task of universities.
In close consultation and cooperation with other University institutes ZWW develops innovative, market-oriented training programmes that meet today’s challenges and integrate new fields and innovations in order to prepare for an increasing dissolution of boundaries. The focus is on scientific training linking theoretical research to professional practice. To promote the dialogue between theory and practice and, by way of scientific thinking, contribute to a critical reflection that not only adapts to changes, but also actively and responsibly helps to shape those changes, is a central concern for scientific training. In this context, the connection with society and the task of transferring knowledge are of particular significance.
ZWW performs the following tasks:
Conception, organisation and coordination of internal training of scientific staff
Conception, organisation and coordination of internal training courses for administrative and technical staff
Suggesting and providing concepts for new training and postgraduate programmes as well as organising and coordinating these programmes
Conception, organisation and coordination of academic continuing education courses for interested adults.
Participating in training and continuing education for teachers
Providing advice on continuing education to graduates and institutions of the University
Student Guidance and Counseling Service for guest students
Evaluation and quality assurance of continuing education programmes
Representation of the University's interests vis à vis local and national academic continuing education committees
Development and accompanying research
Of course ZWW also offers tailor-made training courses to meet your operational needs. Just talk or write to us.
ZWW's position, as well as its tasks is laid down in its charter. You can find the text of this charter.
Our Mission Statement
As an intermediary between the scientific institutions of the university and the public, ZWW sees itself as a "bridge builder" between theory and practice. This is reflected in our continuing education courses, which mediate in terms of content and method between scientific knowledge and social and professional reality. A creative "space of possibilities" for reflection, learning and action is provided i. e. step out of professional practice, build a systematic-analytical distance, gain insights, reflect on, consider and evaluate experiences and situations then influence and change life and work with new ideas.
All programmes aim to support students from the start with the process of dealing with constant changes, developing skills and professionalism. In this context, scientific knowledge, daily life challenges, focussing on (professional) practical problem and personal experiences create a framework for reflection which in the sense of a dialogue between theory and practice not only provides a link to current research but also generates new research impulses and contributes to the formation of the profile of Europa-Universität Flensburg. A high standard of quality of the University’s work and its staff as well as a high added value to society is therefore achieved.
Teaching & learning culture
Continuing education at university level
Our lecturers are without exception academically qualified to a high standard and come from a balanced background of research, teaching and professional practice. They are experienced in educational work with both students and in the field of adult education.
Participants and practice-oriented courses
The courses focus on the professional interests, learning needs and expectations of the participants. The course contents are highly practical and problem-oriented. For this purpose the specific possibility of theory offers a chance to re-examine one’s own situation from an observer's perspective. The courses are aimed at university graduates, professionals, as well as those who are interested in science and wish to expand or update their knowledge.
There are only limited spaces available in our seminars. Learning in a small seminar group always provides an opportunity for an intensive exchange of experiences. Problems can be assessed from multiple perspectives which may make it easier to find solutions.
The Europa-Universität Flensburg campus is new and tailor made to meet demands for the most modern technical and multi-media equipment. Wi-Fi /Wireless LAN is available everywhere on campus. Premises and equipment provide optimum conditions for successful training.
Adapted to the requirements of working people
Most courses, in particular those aimed at external participants are adapted to the requirements of working people i.e., they mostly take place in the evenings and at weekends.
All of our seminars are evaluated individually. This helps to guarantee a high standard of quality and to quickly take up any proposals made by the participants.
Learn where others go on holiday
Flensburg is the northernmost town in Germany and is located on the picturesque Flensburg fjord. You can really notice how close it is to Scandinavia. The city, with its distinct harbour atmosphere and the fjord with its many sandy beaches, steep cliffs and forests invites you to linger - even beyond completion of a training course.
