Never far from the sea!

Flensburg is a way of life. "Live where others take their holidays!" is something we hear often in Flensburg—and it’s true.

The Flensburg Fjord is an arm of the Baltic Sea that extends approximately forty kilometers over the outer and inner fjords into Flensburg’s harbor at the westernmost point. An expansive stretch of coastline with plenty of room for relaxed beaches, water sports, and maritime activities. Along the banks of Flensburg’s harbor, walkways offer a lovely view of the steeply built neighborhoods with their historical facades. Restaurants, boat docks, and museums frame the downtown area.

The city’s three beaches—and the nearby beaches in Glücksburg and Holnis—offer ample opportunities for swimming and kitesurfing. And not infrequently, a whale or dolphin meanders into the Flensburg Fjord. It pays to keep an eye out!

From the Baltic to the North Sea in under an hour

If Flensburg Fjord and the Baltic Sea are too tame for your taste, the wilder North Sea coastline is not too far away. From Flensburg, you can be on the beach in Husum and Dagebüll in less than an hour. The ferries to Sylt and the Hallig islands of Schleswig-Holstein depart from here, as well. And the vast beaches of St. Peter Ording and Rømø—some of which permit motor vehicles to drive right up on the sand—are within a comfortable distance.
