Partnernship for Research Data Handling

Under the leadership of Kiel University, universities and research institutions in Schleswig-Holstein present joint concept

"Data are at the heart of all research," emphasized Education Minister Karin Prien when a consortium of 14 Schleswig-Holstein universities and research institutions presented a concept for a Schleswig-Holstein state initiative on research data management on March 31. Open and based on partnership, this concept is intended to form the basis for sustainable handling of research data in Schleswig-Holstein.

A culture of open data

The "culture of open data" that Minister Prien would like to see isn't always easy to achieve - not for lack of good will, but because of limited resources. As Professor Frank Schwartze, Vice President for Research and International Affairs at the Technical University of Lübeck, pointed out, by no means all research institutions have staff specialized in data management.

The research community in Schleswig-Holstein has now joined forces to meet this challenge and, under the leadership of the University of Kiel. In just five months, it has developed a concept for partnership-based research data management. The state initiative will be the central point of contact for research institutions, funding agencies, and the state of Schleswig-Holstein on the topic of research data management.

Prof. Dr. Iulia Patrut, Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, welcomes the joint perspectives

Prof. Dr. Iulia Patrut, Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer at the European University Flensburg, welcomes the state initiative on research data management Schleswig-Holstein. "EUF's research data management needs of are currently in a dynamic development, with corresponding support structures under construction and an advisory office is currently being created. Thus, these opportunities for exchange and the coordination at the state level  come at the right time. In particular, we expect to be strengthened by better representation as a state within the framework of corresponding initiatives at the federal level. In addition, the specific needs of EUF can be better identified in a state comparison and appropriately communicated within the framework of the National Research Data Infrastructures (NFDI). EUF is excited about collaborating in the planned working groups and welcomes the new shared perspectives that will benefit researchers."
