Short biography
Monika Eigmüller was born in Berlin in 1975. Between 1995 and 2001 she studied political science, sociology and economics at the University of Leipzig. From 1997 to 1998 she lived in Madrid where she worked for the German Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation and later for the Spanish PSOE. After completion of her studies, she worked for the UN Refugee Relief Organization UNHCR at first and finally returned to the University of Leipzig where she took her doctoral degree with a dissertation about the European border control policy in the year 2006. Subsequently, she did teaching and research work at the Free University of Berlin, the University of Leipzig, Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington/ Seattle, Institut d'études politiques de Strasbourg, the Center Marc Bloch in Berlin, the University of Applied Sciences in St. Gallen as well as New York University. In the year 2008, she established the Junior Research Group `European Social Area´ by way of a Schumpeter Fellowship of the Volkswagen Foundation at the University of Leipzig at first, and since 2012 at the Free University of Berlin. She has been working as a Professor of Sociology and Sociological European Research at Europa-Universität Flensburg since March 2015.
Apart from historical sociology, Monika Eigmüller´s resarch focus is primarily on European-related sociological issues, such as e.g. the development of a EU social policy or the European migration policy. She is currently working on a book about "The citizens´ Europe: The European area as a resource of individual actions". The volume entitled "European Integration, Processes of Change and the National Experience" has just been published.
